Anime Takeout Review

The AnimeTakeout site is very basic, but it is a niche service aimed at folk who enjoy anime and manga films and tv series. The collection is quite large at around 2500 titles. Browsing and searching is efficient and adding items to your queue is pretty easy.

I expect with a niche service like this that because there won't be tons of copies of certain titles, you might find some take a while to be available to sent to you. They have a plan for everybody ranging from 1 dvd out at a time to 10.

The company is based in Los Angeles, so it would be ideal for those living in California area for fast turnaround of anime dvd's.

Anime Takeout Customer Reviews
Silosi from Spokane on 2008-07-11 Rates them:
MangaTakeout.com is actually quite good. Their support always answered my email questions within 24 hours. Delivery speed could be better, but that is because they only have one location compared to Netflix (I have Netflix subscription as well). They do have a model to improve delivery speed. That is you notify that you have sent items back, so they can send next batch without waiting for arrival. I gave 8 out of 10 mostly because it takes longer than Netflix, but Netflix is best in business.
WahDee from Culver City on 2008-02-05 Rates them:
Netflix is faster if you are someone that rents, watches and returns it the next day. You will get more for your money with Netflix. That said, if you are looking for a place to rent anime dvds and manga books and do not expect netflix shipping times, give this place a try. They have a great selection of both DVDs and Manga.

As for customer service, I have had only postive experience with their staff. Very responsive and friendly customer service.
BTX98 from Orange County on 2008-01-03 Rates them:
Since joining Manga Takeout, I have rediscovered my interest for manga and anime. There are manga of all types of genre to rent and the selection ( to me ) seems endless. I have been able to follow some of the longer series as new volumes are released. Overall, a great investment and would recommened to others.
phil from CA on 2007-12-28 Rates them:
Do NOT sign up with them. Look at their contact page, there is no support number or any way of contacting them.
They will not reply to your emails. If you ever give any company your credit card number and personal information, you should be able to at least have a phone number to contact them.

A couple of my friends used animetakeout and then their password didn't work anymore. Their "forgot password" service did not work and they never answered any email sent to them.

DO NOT JOIN THIS SITE UNTIL THEY GET BETTER CUSTOMER SERVICE.
lisnoire from Olympia, WA on 2007-11-20 Rates them:
I've been with Anime Takeout for well over two years. I run a 10 out DVD subscription in the summer and a 5 out in the winter. I find their delivery time very satisfactory and the quick return feature a benefit. They have always responded very quickly to any inquiry or comment I have made. I think I have only had to return two damaged discs in all the time I have been with them.

I rent anime from Netflix as well and I have to say that it is a pleasure to do business with someone who understands the need to ship discs in series order. It is also nice to have a means of checking new releases and adding the latest edition of a series to your rental queue as they come available.

As Gerald said, “They have more here than Netfix or Blockbuster. They may have more then both of them combined. None of it is Hong Kong imported.”
Sean P. from Seattle on 2007-11-13 Rates them:
Great Service. I use them to rent both manga and anime movies. I tend to take my time watching and reading so delivery time is not a big deal for me. I love that they have a feature to report when you return something. Cheaper to rent than buy the books.
Kevin from CA on 2007-09-25 Rates them:
I initially joined Manga Takeout to rent the Bleach manga books and ended up renting other manga series and a few anime DVDs. I like being able to rent both anime dvds and manga books. I believe this is the only service out there to offers manga rentals. Prices are a bit pricier than netflix or blockbuster but I think its due to the extra postage in shipping books.

Customer service is very responsive as long as you use their online support system. I always receive a response to each question or issue I report.
Bob M from THE OC on 2007-08-22 Rates them:
2 thumbs up for their Manga Rental service , Manga Takeout. Great way for me to read some manga series that is too expensive to buy. Decent turnaround times. Customer Reps are nice. I have the 2 out Plan and rent about 4-6 books a month. Thats way cheaper than trying to buy the books especially if I don't want to keep them.
Cherrie from Los Angeles on 2007-08-01 Rates them:
Great Service. I'm a subscriber to their Manga rental service. It is a great way for me to sample a few volumes of manga series I may want to buy. Also great for reading longer series such as Ranma or Inu-Yasha that is too expensive to collect.
Don't expect to receive the manga books in 2-4 days like DVDs - the books take a bit longer but with their quick return feature - I can get about 6 books per month easily.
Kakashi314 from Oregon on 2007-06-29 Rates them:
The turnaround is pretty slow, but varies. There was one instance where it took just 2 days to get the DVDs back, and the early return feature is very helpful. I've never had a problem finding something entertaining or getting the wrong DVDs.

My biggest qualm is their complete lack of customer service. No responce to e-mail or a phone number to contact them by. But I've had only fundamental questions and my rentals have not been hindered by the lack of contact.

In short, I would reccomend to anime renters patient enough to search through a long list of titles and wait a couple of days for shipping.
Tony from Arizona on 2007-06-20 Rates them:
I was a customer of theirs for 4-5 months. Everything went well and was good until my password stopped working. I used the password recovery and it didn't work. I tried to email them several times at 2 different emails i had and one came back as undeliverable the other was never answered. I kept trying to contact them for 2 weeks then hand wrote a note and put it in with the DVD's and no answer from that. Once the 3rd week came around i decided to contest the charges on my credit card it was at this point the credit card services gave me a phone number to call and of coarse just an answering machine. With no answer form the message i left the next day i contested the charges and changed my card number. On the 4th week when i got my conformation that the money had been returned to my account i thought just for the hell of it i would try to get on and i was able to. Once logged in it is easy to contact the customer service and get a response. All i asked for was a phone number just in case i had a similar problem and they gave me the run around and now are ignoring me. What kind of company won't give you a phone number and ignores you if you ask for one after being a customer for 4 months?
Lynn from CA on 2007-04-24 Rates them:
Great service! They now rent manga books also! This is the only service in the US that I know of that rent manga graphic novels. Manga Subscription also includes rental of anime DVDs as well so it is a dual membership. Manga selection is very large and turnaround is decent. They have a feature called Quick Return that lets you report when you have returned your books so your next set will ship. I am able to get about 6-8 books per month on a 2 out plan. It is a great and inexpensive way for me to read manga. If you like the book , you can also choose to buy it at a discounted price.
Keith from Mobile, Alabama on 2006-08-04 Rates them:
My experiance with AnimeTakeout has Been Positive All the way.
The Exeption to this is that they are small and cant carry hundreds of a single title and if u realy want to see something popular u usualy have to wate 3 weeks my turn around is every monday i would receive new anime i was on the ten movie plan. translates into 300 dollors worth of anime in the mail in one week that is a big risk. just for 60 dallors for that plan
Robert from OC, CA on 2006-02-21 Rates them:
These guys are great. They have all the anime you can think of, shipping is pretty fast about 2 days average for me. They have a system where you report when you mail out your DVDs. Before my returns are received from them, my next 2 movies are already shipping. Wait times for certain popular series tend to be a bit long but thats how it is for other services when it comes to new anime releases. Just keep the DVDs you want in your queue and you will accumulate enough points that you will eventually be the first in line for it. Site is easy to naviagate and queue management is extremely easy with the features they have. Site load times are a bit slow sometimes mainly during peak surfing hours. Customer service is friendly and personal but they can be slow to respond sometimes. I think they are trying hard though but they are a small growing company. Overall, it is a great service if you love anime. IF you are looking for a place to rent everhting - anime, american movies etc..then this is not the palce for you. They specialize in anime. Rumors is that they will be offering other genres soon ( fingers crossed )
anime watcher from Ohio on 2006-01-24 Rates them:
I've been a member at Anime Takeout for several months now and overall I've been very pleased with their rental service. They carry a large selection of Anime titles and their site is feature rich and easy to use. Their price is on par with other companies that rent anime…well, except for Netflix and that large companies but those companies don't carry as many anime titles. As for turn-around, I think it's pretty good. Not the best because they only have the one distribution center in California (I live in Warren, OH). It would take about 3-4 days for DVDs to reach me so not great but not bad either. I also did notice that there was a slow down around the holidays which is to be expected but I was able to use their Advance Return feature to keep my turn-around up. I've contacted customer support a couple of times and they have been responsive and helpful so I have no complaints there as well.
Artemisia from Los Angeles on 2006-01-07 Rates them:
I've been a subscriber for a few months, and haven't been that impressed by the service. I do enjoy that I can choose from all the titles, but that's where my satisfaction ends. Turnaround time is awful, and I'm about a 45 minute drive away with traffic. My DVDs arrive in two to three days, and take anywhere up to 4 to 7 days to get sent back and processed. I have 2 DVDs mailed back to Anime Takeout, and they still haven't received them. You can only report one early return at a time, so this has posed a problem. The poor turnaround has been a problem for months. The rental queue prioritization is clunky at best, often sending me titles at the very bottom of my long priority list when there are higher priority DVDs that are listed as available. It's almost as if there's no prioritization actually being used.

Also, I am dissatisfied with their customer service. I was billed twice on the same day last month, and have received no reply from customer service when I requested a refund for the extra subscription charge. There is no phone number to contact them, which I see as a warning on the professionalism of the company. I have no way to talk to their billing department about the erroneous charge.
Wendy from Illinois on 2005-12-15 Rates them:
Turnaround shouldn't be much of a problem anymore since they have a new feature that lets you report a DVD returned after u put it in the mailbox. While its traveling back to them, they send you your next DVDs. There are limitations to this feature, they probably don't want people abusing it. I found it really useful though and its cut back a lot on turnaround time. Before my first set of DVDs gets back to them, my second set is already on its way to me! So i dont have much to complain about.
Andy from USA on 2005-12-04 Rates them:
i got to agree with most of u guys 1 they have a large selecetion of anime since they specialize in taht category but they really do have long returning time it toke me 6 day to return a disc i live in san diego right next to los angeles the company area its like a 2 hour drive their the price are higher than the other company 3 day out plan by 3.00$ i was wondering how many day it take to return disc for other company like blockbuster or netflix any comments?
john from az on 2005-09-20 Rates them:
well not that great of a site, they sure have anime but not that much. Checkout greencine they have more than Blockbuster and even have adult titles. if you like fast shipping then choose netflix they have a lot of anime too. eve series, from dragon ball, ranma, etc..
Danielle from NC on 2005-09-07 Rates them:
I joined Anime Takeout after I saw a link to them from Anime On DVD. If you like Anime then this is definitely the site for you. Shipping times takes about 3 days for me out in NC, so on the other side of the country. DVDs are sent in a bundle ( you get to choose the size ), so it feels like I am getting more DVDs than with those single mailers.

The website is easy to use and they have some great features that are geared for Anime Renters such as series lock so DVDs in a series are sent in order.

The only thing I wish they had were asian films or other kind of movies.
khuong from Arizona on 2005-08-19 Rates them:
nothing to say much but after my 10 days free trial. there is one thing i would like to say

shipping is quite slow, only took 2 days to arrive at my house. But when i return them took 7 days, and i live in arizona right next to cali.

so for my 10 days trial, I'm only able to watch 2 dvds estimate it to the total of 8 per month.

if that's how many dvds you watch a month then it's for you but not for me.
little guy from az on 2005-08-17 Rates them:
well i have nothing to complain about much except the return shipping last for more then 6 days and still they didn't receive my dvds. Bettert yet when i cancel, the moment i click the "cancel my membership" the website freezes? i log on again and it not even open.

i don't know what they tryng to do here but i'm not going to pay for the dvds if they charge me.

this is the first time i experiencing this problem website not working when yu cancel the membership? hum... is it technical problems by nature or intentional technical problems?

oh, i'm not even in my paid membership yet, just my 10 days trial and i only able to watch 2 dvds, 2dvds for 10 days yet so 6 dvds a week for 16.95 well i've seen better deal

oh i live in az
Weasel_girl from USA on 2005-04-04 Rates them:
Great place to rent Anime. I've been a subscriber for 2 months and so far I am very satisfied with the service. As the above reviewer mentioned, newer releases may take a while but the wait is not too long. Most DVDs are available right away so there is always something to rent. The queue management system is supberb and very easy to use.

Overall, a great service to the anime community.
Gerald from Minneapolis on 2005-03-04 Rates them:
It would be better if they could open another site or 2 across the country. That would make for quicker mailing times. That's it. That is the one fault I have with this company.

Pricing is competetive with most other online DVD rental locations. Unlike what the initial review said, the discs are readily available. There can be long waiting times on the most popular titles, but 99% are either available or have a very short waiting time. Discs in your queue have a bar code to show how long the wait should be.

Because so many anime DVDs are multi-disc series, they have a option called the series lock. This means that they won't send disc 4 of a series until they have also sent discs 1-3. This CAN slow your shipping times down, but if you have a fairly large queue it probably won't.

They did recently have some postal problems, but these were cleared up when they stopped shipping just 1 disc at a time (unless you are on the 1 disc plan). For any other plan you decide how many you want sent from a list they provide. Oh, and if your shippment is 3 discs or more, they give you a tracking number for the shipment.

I have never recieved a cracked or scratched disc from anime takeout. That's out of about 200 that I have gone through. That is a record that has not been matched by any of the other online rental companies. They do this by putting the discs in a foam sleeve. They used to have foam around the discs, inside the regular sleeve, but the added weight was causing the shipping price to go up and was causing the aforementioned shipping delays.

Unlike some other companies, every disc they list is either on hand, or on order. For the ones that are on order, they are clearly marked as such (unfortunatly they do not list a date they will have it, but they usually have it within a month).

If you love anime, this is the place to get it. They have more here than Netfix or Blockbuster. They may have more then both of them combined. None of it is Hong Kong imported.
