Global ERental Review

Global Video are one of the largest video rental chains in the UK. In 2004 they launched their online dvd by post service and initial impressions are that it's a good service.

The site is easy on the eye, searching is ok, browsing is good and they have good turnaround and availability. Their classification of genres was a bit thin though. Although they say they have 13,000 titles there seems to be far far less on the site than that number suggests.

At the moment they are offering an excellent 30 day (up to 3 dvd's out at a time) trial. Their pricing for the plans are excellent, probably the best UK plan I've seen. Well worth taking advantage of their trial.

DVD's in my test were sent from Glasgow, but they may send from other location depending on your city. One thing I didn't like was they used little cardboard dvd holders, one of the few who do this - not exactly great for sending through the mail. The quicker they change to a thin plastic holder the better.

absolutly rubbish most of the dvds was very badley scratched and would not play at all and most of the ps2 games would not even load so i cancelled now i see there site dont load so they mustof gone bust lol good job to they was rubbish
steve from manchester on 2006-08-10 Rates them:
the site is no longer working and hasn't been for some time therefore I think it's safe to assume they are no longer in the business.
Christine from Oxford on 2006-02-10 Rates them:
This site is dreadful! Keep away if you want to spare yourself the experience of receiving scratched DVD after scratched DVD. Not a single one of the DVDs that we received were playable from start to finish without skipping or freezing at some point. Some of them would not even start.

There are only so many times you can call customer service about the problem before it becomes a waste of time. Save your money for another service. Trust me. You'll be much less frustrated!
Sam from Birmingham on 2005-10-18 Rates them:
Customer service is good always obtained a response to my questions.

Also good DVD turnaround although had problems with the quality of their DVD's as possibly a third or more of them were badly scratched. This affected more of the older titles then newer ones.

However good choice of DVD's and would recommend
Steve from Manchester on 2005-10-11 Rates them:
Global no longer offer any free trials which although annoying for potential customers means paying customers should get a better service.
James from Ayrshire on 2005-10-10 Rates them:
Poor service. Recently signed up for 3 titles per week but way Global update dispatch list you generally only get 2 per week. Also DVD's in pretty poor condition.
Peter from Sheffield on 2005-09-22 Rates them:
Like others here, I ended up cancelling my free trial early after 2 weeks. Out of 8 discs I received only 2 were fit to be put inside my DVD player as received. 5 out of the 8 would not play properly all the way through and a replacement of one DVD was just as unplayable as the first copy. Complete waste of time & effort. Stay away!
nicholas from London on 2005-06-03 Rates them:
Absolute rubbish !
Avoid this company like the plague.
Of ten DVD's sent, only ONE was playable.
They obviously buy in their stock from rejects thrown out by reputable companies.
Complete waste of time.
Hope this wasters go bust ASAP.
Complete and utter joke !
headbut from London on 2005-05-08 Rates them:
Of the companies I've tried (Blockbuster, Sainsburys using love film and this one) this is the worst by far. I'd say three quarters of the dvd's came scratched or covered in 15 different types of food. I can only assume most of global's customer base eat Farley's Rusks and use the dvd's as coasters before returning them. Perhaps a disc cleaning policy might help.

Turnaround in the trial period was nothing special and this is normally when companies try to impress you so you'll sign up and pay for something! If they cleaned the discs I'd give them 5 out of ten, but when you can hardly watch then ones they sand you then 2 out of ten seems fair.
Ian from Stoke-on-Trent on 2005-04-27 Rates them:
Signed up for the 30 day trial and cancelled just over a week, turn around was very slow took 6 days to register one of the dvds had been returned and the discs were scratched and didn't play to good, had high hopes seeing as they were cheap, but i guess you only get what you pay for
Brendan from Cardiff on 2005-04-26 Rates them:
Very, very slow turnaround - normally it's 5 days between sending old discs and receiving new ones. Of the 6 discs they sent to me, 5 turned up and 3 were so scratched they wouldn't play. Cancelled my membership a couple of weeks before the end of the free trial but all they've done is frozen my account because they haven't yet received the one disc that I reported as never arriving.

Just not worth the hassle.
Jennifer from London on 2005-04-25 Rates them:
Don't bother with these guys - out of about 10 dvds I received, 100% were filthy, scratched and virtually unwatchable. I complained to them, merely to be told that I should reorder the films. Ok, it was a free trial, but why would anyone want to sign up for good when the quality is so abyssmal?
neil from leeds on 2005-04-23 Rates them:
I have only rented games from this site theres a reson they are cheap in my opinion they dont employ enough people to check disks hence i found myself getting broken disk afte broken disk i lived with that until my three disk total included 2 scratched game and the second disk to a game that was absoloutly useless untill they sent me the first (which i didnt get i left a month later)i had such high hopes as well :(
Brian from Glasgow on 2005-04-11 Rates them:
Previously I came on here, banging on about how great Global were & how everyone should try them.
I sincerely hope nobody listened!!

Over the past 2 months I have experienced:
Poorly maintained discs (dispatch cases have no protective covering)
60% of discs are faulty
Poor customer service
Very slow turnaround (some discs take 4 days to show returned)

And now, after giving a full weeks notice to cancel, and having all discs returned, they have failed to do so & payment was taken at 2am this morning!!!
2am!!!

Avoid like the plague.
Gary from Devon on 2005-03-10 Rates them:
im on there trial at the moment and find them AWFUL !!

really slow , been with them 2 weeks and have had only 2 lots of DVDs.
they seem to take a day to tell you they have them back and rhen another day before then send the next out . AND , they close sat and sun
will be cancelling
AW from London on 2005-03-03 Rates them:
Turn around is SLOW. If you want quick disks, use LoveFilm or even Tesco, but not these guys.

Envelopes ARE plastic which is good, but does not make up for lack of speed and choice.

Poor.
Brian from Glasgow on 2005-02-10 Rates them:
I did the free trial, left and have now come back to Global.
Considering their stores are a rip-off, this is one of the best around-great prices, quick sending new releases & pretty good turnaround.
(Well, for me anyway-I'm in Glasgow as well as them!)

Only bad point is they don't have a lot of older/TV/non-blockbuster titles - but I did request a series & they have informed me they are going to add it!

Highly recommended-especially if your choice is them or ballbuster-sorry blockbuster!
Steve from Manchester on 2004-12-22 Rates them:
I've been with these people for just under 2 months although perhaps only after 6 months can you get a true picture!

Pros:-

1. Their customer service is very good - they always respond to emails (so far) and are polite.

2. Their trial is the best on the market as it offers 1 MONTH instead of the 14 days most companies offer.

3. Pricing is excellent - again the best on the market - 3 disks for £13, 4 for £16 or 5 for £19.

4. So far, I have usually got selections from the top of my list.

5. They have a good range of titles and an excellent site.

Cons:-

1. Turnaround - it's slow because they send out disks the day after receiving disks back and also because they only operate monday to friday. Typically if you send a disk back it takes around 7 days before you receive the next one - so you may find that if you are a movie fanatic the 3 disks plan isnt enough. You may therefore find the 4 disk plan is comparible with other companies 3 disk plans if they have a faster turn around.

2. Also they send the disks out in a non padded envelope which means they arent well protected against postal damage.

3. Because their trial is so good, I suspect the service might deteriote when they get an influx of trialists - other rental companies have experienced this.

4. If you want to change service plan you do this by the on line account management - very easy BUT the system allows you to do this only 2 weeks or more before your next billing date - this is a real pain.

Highly recommended.

I THINK GLOBAL E-RENTAL DVD IS ONE OF THE BEST AS ITS THE CHEAPEST,FASTEST AND ABOVE ALL THEY HAVE KIMBERLEY WORKING FOR THEM WHO IS VERY VERY HELPFUL,FRIENDLY AND SO SMART GIRL,THANK YOU KIMBERLEY FOR THE GREAT SERVICE YOU'RE DOING.
Ray from Milton Keynes on 2004-10-07 Rates them:
Envelopes are naff, and slow turnaround...following instruction on envelope i was left with a portion too small and had to pay for postage, not a big thing, but hey, I'm a tight wad
Sam from Largs on 2004-09-11 Rates them:
Well, they're fast, they're cheap and have a good quality of disks. Heck they even sent me my top 5 four times in a row.
They don't, however, have a large selection of titles if you looking for other titles than the lastest blockbusters, so I found myself running out of titles that I wanted within a month.

Global eRental would be the best one around if they would only increase the amount of titles to the levels Lovefilm and DVDs365 offer.
colin from scotland on 2004-07-20 Rates them:
slow turnaround .10 dvds 1 unplayable
