Netflix are by far the most recognised name in the online dvd rental world. As a pioneer they have even featured in Time's top 50 best websites. Over the years they have refined their site to make it very easy to browse. They don't bombard you with information and keep things pretty straightforward. With one of the largest ranges of titles and many distribution centres through the states, they are also one of the fastest companies in sending discs to you.

They presently have over 20 distribution centres.

Due to the huge membership numbers with netflix (around 2 million) inevitably with certain new releases they won't have enough copies to meet demand, so bear this in mind. Their rental queue system does let you know about a dvd - whether it will be available 'now', 'short wait', 'long wait' or 'very long wait'.

A price war is happening between Netflix and Blockbuster, both now at around $18 for the 3-disc plan. Sign up fast to take advantage!

Netflix US Customer Reviews
Les from Victoria, Texas on 2008-06-08 Rates them:
If you asked me 3 months ago what my rating for them was, I would say 98% or higher! If you asked what I rate them for quality of service for the past 2 months I would say 60% or less. That is a big jump for me and very disappointing as we have been loyal customers for almost 3 years. Good Points: (used to be) high turnaround on movies, good quality disks, good value, Extremely good selection! (last 2 months)Problems: saying not receiving my movies(3) and I've had to report problems to receive new ones, VERY slow turnaround-a week or longer, customer service treated me like I'm an idiot and she talked like a kindergarten teacher. We are unhappy now-but we are going to give Netflix one more month. If service sucks we will begin making a weekly visit to our cheap mom & pop video store. :)
Jennifer from Sun City West, AZ on 2008-06-08 Rates them:
We receive requests pretty quick, but seems like every movie we rent we watch half the movie then the problems begin. We have yet to see an entire movie all the way thru then when you call to complain, it's not like they even care because the next one that comes is the same story. I've had enough and am cancelling my service and I will pick up my own DVD's and if there is a problem return them for another and not lose the money. I am completely fed up, would never come back.
Jenny from NYC on 2008-05-31 Rates them:
I had netflix for a long time, about 2 yrs and I have not really seen any problems w renting DVD. The only problem for me was the instant viewing because apparently my laptop does not have enough RAM or something so I cannot see any instant movies but my laptop is about 5 yrs old so its pretty basic, I cant even play video games on it. I highly recommend netflix because its straight-forward, simple and cheap. They deliver movies very very fast and received them quickly as well.
Jim from Black Hills on 2008-04-10 Rates them:
Netflix has its problems, most notably throttling of high turnaround users. But, having tried all the other major and mid-level DVD providers, I have returned to and am best satisfied with Netflix. Be willing to settle for $1.50 per rental (no matter "the plan") and Netflix will deliver the movie you queue, with a very large selection to choose from. Avoid Intelliflix at all costs, these folks need to be prosecuted for fraud. Hate to call them "folks", Intelliflix employees don't qualify (neither do other liars and thieves).
JT from Chicago, IL on 2008-04-04 Rates them:
I've had no problems w Netflix and found it to be a reliable affordable service. turnaround is very fast (from the day I put it in the mail, I'll get new movies in 2 days). movies are generally playable and in good shape (if a DVD is scratched can report a problem and they'll send out a replacement; although the replacement will replace another DVD in your queue). The feature of watching movies on your computer is a nice bonus too.

My only complaint is if you want an obscure movie (ie., one that they only have one or two copies of) and there's a "long wait" or "very long wait" on it, you will have to wait for a long time.

Overall, a reliable and reasonably priced service. Vastly superior to anything of its kind (eg, Blockbuster online)
NetFlux from Czech Republic on 2008-03-19 Rates them:
Netflix's recent move to provide "unlimited" would have been the coolest thing ever---if it weren't a lie and a rip off.

That's right. After you watch your 17 hours of seamless streaming movies, it starts crashing your browser for you. So some folks are not actually GETTING the unlimited hours. Officially, they're on unlimited, technically however, Netflix prevents it.

This is a classic bait and switch. I have tracked this since the unlimited thing BEGAN.

Consistently, and every month, after 17 hrs of watching seamlessly... it won't allow any more watching and crashes browsers to prevent users from the promised "Unlimited".

People should be outraged. Netflix was fine before this, after this, I can't trust them anymore.
Karen from Colorado on 2008-03-16 Rates them:
Boy, was I naive when I signed up for the free trial, and then their 3-at-a-time unlimited plan. I knew nothing about their throttling tactics, so I've been renting lots of movies and returning them quickly. But now I've had new releases in my queue for weeks -- some for over a month -- and all I receive are titles that are way down on my list. Plus, their customer services folks are just downright rude! I'll give it another two weeks, and if I don't get any new releases, I'll probably quit and try another provider.
james shroed from san mateo on 2008-02-25 Rates them:
beware that only during your free trial ehit will send you movies the very instant they receive your return. after the trial, things will be much much much much much much much much much much much much slower!
Ron McIntosh from Atlanta,Georgia on 2008-02-03 Rates them:
Yes they start out great, and then the tricks begin if you try to use too much of the service. I have a distribution center 5 miles from my home. Even though I have plenty of movies in my Que, they will tell me they are doing me a favor by sending the next in Que from San Francisco. A sneaky way of slowing down the turn around process. I will cancel at the end of this month. Also been having a great number of disc damaged.
Alex from Cambridge on 2008-01-11 Rates them:
I have been with Netflix for about 18 months and I have had a very good experience. I initially started on the three unlimited disc plan but cut back to the two unlimited disc plan (this was very easy to do). The turn around is usually 2 days (not taking into account weekends) and I usually get my top choice. Rarely have I not been able to get a new release. The instant watch service is good and at no extra cost but the choice is somewhat limited at the moment and it does not operate on a Mac.
I had one disc go missing and I just used their DVD problem page. There were no quibbles and they replaced the disc.
Unfortunately, I will have to cancel my account as I am moving back to the UK where it seems I will have to pay twice the price for half the service! I only wish Netflix operated in the UK.
Cesar from Austin on 2008-01-03 Rates them:
I was a netflix customer for about a year in 2006, I got very good service at the beginning but after a while service was not that good but it was not that bad either, then I switched to BB total access since it was a better deal and I was usually able to get new releases in the store. The main problem I saw with BB is that in general it took them more time to send me the movies and some movies at the top of my queue were never sent even when showing available. Then BB decided to increase the prices and they canceled my account. I was really unhappy with BB price increase so I decided to go back to Netflix, this time the service on netflix was only good the first week, then every time I sent 2 movies they only get one the next day if I am lucky and the second one takes at least another day to show as received. I am in a 2 out at a time which basically means 2 a week since netflix turnaround time is not good even with a local distribution center. I am already back on BB in a 3 at a time plan (17.99), if I get 3 a week plus the 5 in store exchanges I'll be getting around 17 movies a month instead of the 10 I am getting with netflix. You may think 17 is a lot but half of them are for my kids. Some other reason I prefer BB over netflix is that the 5 movies I exchange at the store appear immediately as returned so I have better chances of getting the movies faster than netflix.
Tom from Albuquerque on 2007-12-18 Rates them:
I just subscribed a couple of weeks ago. They say, "shipped to you in one business day", but it took over a week to get my first movie!!! They are liars!
Hovino from Santa Cruz, CA on 2007-12-18 Rates them:
I have been a NETFLIX suscriber for THREE years not. So far I have had no major problems.... maybe 3-4 scratched DVD's that did not play, which is much less than the video store I use to rent from.

The turn around time is excellent, the service for me is not even an issue since is it NEVER NEEDED.

I love the features, the site is user friendly and innovative.

My only gripe is that many of the new releases don't show up on the NEW RELEASE TAB, and if you are a main-stream movie watcher, you may never notice. But I also like some obscure titles that don't show up. I wish there would expand there NEW RELEASE LIST.

At least they are not BLOCK BUSTER, which is the anti-christ... phantom late charges, send you to collections for movies you never heard of, let alone rented!

KeKe from USA on 2007-12-17 Rates them:
For a long time, I resisted joining netflix for the usual reasons. I WAS SO WRONG! Netflix is fantastic and really treats their customers like stars. I love the instant viewing capability for tv shows and movies. It's part of your membership. The movies come fast; often times, net day. The return policy is simple. I had one damaged DVD and they gave me a month free. I hope they never change their attitude on treating the customers like their numero uno. GREAT JOB
Eric from Chicago on 2007-12-08 Rates them:
I have been a netflix subscriber for about 3 months now and have to say overall it is pretty disappointing. The website is very easy to use, well organized, very easy to find the movie you want, and good at recomending new movies. The movies also ship pretty fast, usually a day to send one back and another day to get the new one. There has been maybe three or four times when it took another day or two. So far it probably sounds like a good service however none of the previous factors matter when dvd after dvd is damaged. I find myself reporting damaged dvd's all the time, it's incredibly frustrating. I have also been sent the wrong movie a couple of times, that just should not happen. No doubt Netflix needs to do something about this before everyone gets frustrated and leaves. But to all the current Netflix subscribers out there, please take better care of the discs. Is it so much to ask that you don't throw the disk around on your coffe table or the top of the dvd player and scratch it up, or put your greasy fingers all over the bottom of the disk. If you'd just stop being slobs and take better care of the disks it would be an amazing service.
Lee from San Francisco on 2007-11-30 Rates them:
As a new subscriber, they stuck us with a Web Interface that they were testing. As a result, we were unable to find new releases. Customer service and supervisors could not help as we were part of a trial. They told us to go to other websites to figure out what movies were recently released. THIS SERVICE SUCKED. WE CANCELLED.
Helen from Los Angeles on 2007-11-08 Rates them:
As a new customer this company has already apalled me on their poor service. We've had to report a problem for each movie we've gotten because it either arrived scratched and unplayable or arrived several days after they supposedly sent it. We live in LA, not in the middle of nowhere. When we send back their movies they say they get them a day later, but when they say they shipped out the next movie, it seems to take a WEEK to arrive to our address. They are blatantly lying about when they send out the movies, and though we have reported the scratched discs to them I'm sure they don't do anything but send them out to the next customer. This is absolutely ridiculous! Most other comments stated that their service was good at first and then went downhill, but new customers now get shitty service from the BEGINNING.I'm probably going to cancel my service in a few days.
SOMEONE_N_SF from SAN FRANCISCO on 2007-11-07 Rates them:
1. Netflix ships to me with only one day turnaround (ships day they receive my discs and I get them the very next business day). I've been with them since 9/07 and the pattern is not fluctuating. I think it is a fortunate case that there is a local shipping center because I understand that this is not the case for all members of Netflix.
2. Customer Service hold time is under 5 minutes (I used a code provided to me upon reporting a problem with a disc); I received an incorrect disc, which was understandable since there are two mini-series by the same name (happened the first week of free trial period). They compensated me for the inconvenience by extending my free trial an additional 14 days.
3. Reason for giving the rating a 9 and not a 10, I think it takes a little too long to load a new profile photo and the amount of dvds that can be in your queue is maxed at 500 discs. I think it should max out at 1000. Finally, why not allow people to send in suggestions via email?
Pat from Oregon on 2007-10-23 Rates them:
Hey there!

I have Netflix for about 2 years. It's OK, AI guess, I think they do throttle if you get too much DVD. Overall it's OK.

Netflix as a job applicant:
I live in Oregon and applied as a CSR with Netflix, which the customer service center is located. I thought I was 'in like flynn' with at least an interview with my extensive exceptional CS background, experience and skills. Not only did I NOT get an interview. I also DID NOT hear a YES or NO from Netflix regarding my status. I guess there were 40 plus openings for CS reps. I thought I would get at least an interview, but nadda and nadda to the status, after over a month. That tells me Netflix is a flaky company. It would of been nice to receive a rejection letter or email. Look at the job section on their website and Netflix make it sound like it's a dream to work for them. That's why I applied. I guess you can say anything to make the company look good. Look at Enron in the beginning, just a gem of a company. Now I wonder why I did not get an interview. Maybe I have too good of a customer service background and they are really hiring the people a CUSTOMER NO SERVICE background and attitude. After reading the throttling and the negative reviews here, plus the how they treat their applicants for a job. Shows the true color of Netflakes!

Netflix DVD service = 5 fair to good.

Applying to Netflix = 1 poor

I'm cancelling my account with Netflakes soon.
Can't really give my business to a company that is flaky!

Just a final thought, the starting hourly wages and benefits at Netflix was very exceptional. I was surprised that Netflix decided to open a call center in the US. Also, wondering how long before the competition plus when the profit goes down that Netflix close up shop and farm out the customer service calls overseas, like alot of big companies have.

Ciao :)
Jim from California on 2007-10-23 Rates them:
Quite a few reviews here complain about the turn-around time. I suppose it is indicative of our fast-paced culture. I am very happy with Netflix and the service they offer. I no longer have to drive to the store, deal with crowds, or have second and third choices because the movie I came to rent is already checked out. I build my queue and forget about it. The cost savings is there when I factor in my time and gas. If it takes a day or two longer to receive a movie sometimes, so what? I have more of a life than sitting on the couch watching a movie or going to pieces because -- shock -- I might have to wait for something in this day and age.
MRM from Farmville on 2007-10-16 Rates them:
I hate Netflix. It was by far the biggest waste of $30 I can possibly think of. The website is misleading. Everywhere it says FREE TRIAL but most free trials are a month free. If you dig far enough you will discover that it is only a 2 week trial. Because they did not clearly mark this, I now owe the bank an overdraft fee of $35 dollars since I don't get paid for just a few more days. They do not give you clear information on when you will be charged.
I rented a total of 6 movies from Netflix and only 2 of them actually worked. I could have bought half the movies I rented for the money Netflix has cost me.
Also, their service is HORRIBLE. I live 45 minutes away from a distribution center and it takes a week and a half for the next set of movies to arrive. I could drive them there myself faster than that.
I would not recommend Netflix to ANYONE. It's a total rip off.
Erik from Cheyenne on 2007-10-14 Rates them:
Like everyone else being honest about Netflix who are on a 3-out plan, it started out great then the throttling begins. Evidence? The closest distribution center for me is Denver, 100 miles away. During the trial period dvds I sent back one day arrived at Netflix the NEXT day (business day of course). This was great. After my trial period the dvds would begin to take 2 days to get to Netflix in Denver. And then, towards the end of my first month, it took 2-3 days. So, having a friend in Denver, I mailed him a letter along with mailing my dvd to Netflix. And guess what? Yes...he got the letter the next day, Netflix didn't get their dvd (they say) until 2 days later. I did this twice. Both times, sames results.
I need no further proof than this that Netflix does indeed sit on your returned dvds as a way to throttle you. No Netflix for me anylonger, and no Blockbuster either.
Tony from HOUSTON on 2007-09-18 Rates them:
My opinion is just like everyone else who says the service starts out great and goes down from there.

Netflix has stated that they give higher movie priority to newer customers and that customers with a higher turnover get slower service b/c it becomes less profitable if you rent more than their typical monthly customer average.

R*db*x is cheaper at a buck a rental for the new releases anyways, and they are all over the place in H, Texas.
Tina from Overland Park, KS on 2007-09-17 Rates them:
I've been with netflix since 2004. I've been happy most of the time with their service but the last few months it has really gotten bad. I am on the 3 at a time plan because I like new releases. I always mail my dvd's back so they get them on Monday and they send me 3 new releases on Tuesday. It has worked wonderful for a long time. Now i'm not getting the new releases anymore and they all change to "long wait" and I can't get them at all. I have no other movies in my queue except upcoming releases so I am paying for no movies. I added some old ones but i'm about out of stuff I want to rent because i'm waiting for new releases. Astronaut Farmer has been in my queue for months. You'd think someone who always paid on time and has been a loyal customer would be able to get a movie but it doesn't work that way. So I like netflix, but right now I am not happy with them at all. If I cannot get these new releases (this week I got 0 even though my movies were all turned in on time, now they have all gone to long wait) I will cancel and go try one of the others. Really frustrating.
Jim and Bess from Columbus on 2007-08-21 Rates them:
My wife and I really love this company. We've had Netflix for about a year now and have never had a problem. The few times we didn't received a movie or it was damaged we simply notified them by email and the problem was taken care of within a day. I really wouldn't pay attention to most of the negative reviews as people like to blame the company for something that is totally not their fault like if people keep movies for a long time (they only have so many copies to go around for 1 million+ people). Or people will give them 1 star because once their movie was a day late. All in all this is I would definitely give them a try.

Only is I hope they add more movies to their play it now section!
Shanna from USA on 2007-08-20 Rates them:
WE have not had an ounce of trouble from Netflix. We have had them for 1 12 years now and the only time they are a tad slow is if the movie isnt in the warehouse closest to us. If it comes from some other warehouse they are very good about emailing me and telling me that it might be a little longer.

We have had two movies lost in the mail going back to them and both were replaced with the next movie to come to me without hesitating. (Both eventually arrived back to them)

We have a two day turn around. If I send them back on monday I have three new ones at my house on wednesday.

There have been times that it takes a few days to get the movies but that is because they are not in the warehouse closest to us. When we started renting classic movies they had to sometimes come from another warehouse which takes longer. And the new releases sometimes takes awhile because of the demand which is understandable.

I would definitly recommend Netflix to anyone. They have been great for us.

Katie from IA on 2007-08-14 Rates them:
In the beginning I loved Netflix. They had a fast turn around and (knock on wood) haven't had any problems with no playable DVD's. I contacted them via e-mail about them not sending me DVD's at the top of my Queue. In return they upgraded my account to 3-at-a-time for a month. (I have the 2-at-a-time) I love the selection and the option to Watch Instantly. Lately I have been disgusted with the fact that I am not able to get New Releases right away, and have had movies sitting in my Queue for months because there is a wait on them. I know that it is not Netflix fault if customers are keeping movies longer than they expect, but they should at least keep up on the demand. I would quit, but I'm too addicted. I don't want to go back to renting New Releases at $3.99 a pop from our local video stores. And I have had problems with Blockbuster (Video Stores) before and do not trust them. So I'm stuck. Hope this review helped you.

Wide range of choices. Great turn-around time at the beginning. But when they started "throttling" me (even after the class action lawsuit against them), I dropped them. I'd rather pay more at the local Blockbuster or pay-per-view on cable than have Netflix play crazy-making mind games with me.

netflix has started distributing a poisonous pop-up ad on internet.

i am a professional who does a lot of work on internet. tonight, after about 45 minutes of work, i had several tabs open on my browser, for further reference. the netflix ad came on without warning. it took over the browser. it disabled all tabs and refused to go away no matter what i did. most of the links provided under "contact us" are limited to people who are members. there seemed to be no way to exit except through signing up as a member.

in the end i figured out that i could try mailing them through a link for media interested in further propaganda from them, and i did so, telling them what i thought of their operation. however, to get out of the internet trap i had to try ctrl-alt-del to get task manager to disable my internet, and even that took several attempts. i lost all the work i had done. i had a deadline to meet, and that is, on purpose, in the past tense.

netflix highjacked my computer in order to force me to buy their service. this is scary, of course, considering that it means that anyone with the skills to do it and a total lack of principle can do this. imagine what the government could do it if so desired. but, short of that, it is infuriating that a private company can presume to pull this kind of stunt. i would have to be typing in 64-point font, with colors, in bold, to express my anger at the idiots at that company.

they may consider themselves terribly clever. i believe that consumers will happily boycott them for their contemptuous treatment of us.

to netflix members: please write the company to convince them to back off, immediately.

Netflix used to be a great movie rental company. However, their rentals have gone downhill in the past six months. It seems like every new dvd rental is unavailable for months after release. I am not sure if its my warehouse location or what but everything is either on a long wait or short wait status. I was carrying thirty movies in my que that never were shipped out for months. Finally I gave up and closed my account. Hopefully they will increase their quantity of dvds in the future.
LISA from DC area on 2007-04-19 Rates them:
We started out okay- we have the 2 rental at a time (unlimited)- but after 1/2 a year- we noticed we were not getting any new releases until 1-2 months afterwards. Comparing with a friend who forks out $$ and gets the highest number- well, they got all the movies no issus. I called to complain (this is after another 6 months of putting up with this).. and they treated me like they didn't care. I am happily booting them (and moving my parens, inlaws and friends) away from netflix and towards blockbuster. the option of going to get another movie sounds nice- besides, all those movies that I was told was a "very long wait" are on a wall with a guarantee to be there by blockbuster..(we had to go rent to get the movies)..
Goodbye netflix!!!
Eward Greene from New Jersey on 2007-04-18 Rates them:
I've had netflix for a couple of years now. Yeah some movies aren't available for a while, and some are scratched, but what dvd rental place doesn't have those problems. Those are general complaints of dvd rentals. Go to your local mom and pop shop, or blockbuster for that matter. They don't always have the movie you want when you want it. Netflix is great because they have a large selection of movies. Not just new releases but anime, classics, music video dvds (hey some people like them), and other genres. Once in a while I'll get a movie scratched bad but it's not the end of the world. One tip for people who complain about shipping speed is find a drop box that's close to the post office if you can't take it the post office directly. Also drop it off early in the morning and it'll get to netflix probably the same day. USPS does 3 pick-ups a day. So the earlier you send it out the better.
I have no complaints about netflix, just one wish... carry more adult content :)

STEPS CUSTOMERS SHOULD TAKE WHEN CANCELLING THEIR ACCOUNT:

If for example you have the three (3) at a time subscription:

1. Wait until you receive all three (3) DVD’s in your home.

2. Delete all the movies in your online queue

3. Cancel your subscription online and inform the company you are returning all movies via the US Postal Service with “Delivery Confirmation.” Save this message.

4. Return the three (3) movies in a bubble envelope to the distribution center with “Delivery Confirmation.” Track the confirmation number via USPS website and when the DVD’s have been delivered, save a copy of this message also.

5. Monitor your credit card bill for approx. 2-3 months to ensure the rental company does not charge you “AFTER” cancellation of account.

Make certain you perform step 1, 2, 3 in the exact order. If for example you cancel account before deleting all movies in queue, then rental company will claim they sent out the next movies in your queue (when in fact they have not) and will claim they never received them back and will charge your credit card!!! This is to squeeze the last bit of money out of you for their company (This happened to me).

The bubble mailer prevents the DVD’s from being damaged during return. All previously saved messages plus the confirmation # shows your credit card company that the online DVD rental company has received your returned DVD’s (Proof for reversing all illegal credit card charges).

i had been with netflix for a few years untill today.they used to be good but over the last year i finally had enough with them forget how many movies they supposedly have to choose from 10 of my last 10 and 15 of my last 20 movies have been damaged and unplayable so if you figure in how many of their movies are damaged beyong repair it really cuts down on their library. they keep wanting to blame the mail even though i've never gotten a damaged mailer. they want to blame people for not reporting damage while at the same time telling me every time i contact them that they check every disk . what a load of crap. i build home and professional entertainment systems for a living so them also always trying to pass the blame to me " do you know how to properly clean a disk and your dvd player " is laughable even more so when all i have to do is look at the disk to see the scratches. i've gotten some that looked like they were rubbed on the floor i got one recently that looked like it had razor cuts going almost all the way through it. yes netflix really does a great job checking for damage and boy they must spare no expense replacing old disks with new.oh they did offer me 2 bonus rental "coupons" to make up for all the unlayable movies. wow so i could get even more scratched nonworking disks yeah let me jump all over that.
David from Oregon on 2007-04-07 Rates them:
I've been with Netflix for three, maybe four years and to date have nothing bad to report. Today I returned a broken disc, the third I've received in all this time. As soon as they get the disc, a replacement will be sent. Nice touch. I am lucky enough to live in a city that has a distribution center, so about 90% of all the discs I've ordered have been in my mailbox within 24 to 48 hours. On rare ocassions they've been sent from Hawaii or the Midwest, and each time I reveived an email notifying me that the wait would be longer. Another nice touch.
One of the most important positives about the company is the vast assortment of films to pick from. I've found obscure B movies and old TV series that I could not find anywhere else. New releases do take some time to be available, but I can wait. Once in awhile I'll head to the local Blockbuster for a brand new release, but not often.
There are some negative reviews out there. The "high usage" customer, which I am during the winter months. On some ocassions, a disc was not readily available, but the next one in my list was shipped. No problem with me, but that's a personal thing. Some customers must have what they ordered, and if they don't, they're upset. Understandable, but in my case, my life does not revolve around the DVD player.
At any rate, I give the company the best rating because I've had great service at a reasonable price. Perhaps if a distribution center were not here in Salem, I'd have a different story to tell. I will be a customer for the long haul.

I watch a lot of movies, and my only complaint would be that shipping is ssslllooowww when I have rented over 12 movies in the last 30 days.

I absolutely love Netflix. I have the 2 out at a time plan and turn around is quick. At first, it was slow ,but now I get my DVD's in about a day. They are always in good condition and if I have a problem, they are there. They didn't charge me for my 14 day trial. They didn't even put it on hold. This is the best company. The only down fall is they don't rent out games. I would recommend this company before all others.

We have been happy with Netflix. We get fast movie turnaround, we don't feel we have been throttled like other people think they have been. We had a few issues with wrong disks in sleeves, and one broken disk but that could have been due to shipping. We had a problem with disks missing in the mail, and Netflix did send out new ones the next day (which arrived fine).

We tried Blockbuster, and we weren't even remotely impressed. That was before the downturn there as well (see the recent BB ratings).

Netflix has almost all videos we want, we almost always get them in order (or the DVD is flagged as being on wait status), and its so easy to change the monthly plan.

So far, we are happy and would like to have the option for downloadable ones (ie through XBox360 to our TV or some such option). Right now, its limited to our computer for downloads, and we just don't watch movies there.

I see many sub-par ratings here among really great ratings. For my part, I get 2 full rotations of DVDs every week (I tend to have quick turnaround since I have DVDs playing all day while I work). I rarely get an unplayable DVD and when I do, a DVD replacement is sent out immediately upon my reporting the issue. The DVD selection is fantastic. Netflix is among the best of the entertainment dollars in my monthly budget.

"I watch the DVDs and mail them back the same day I get them. Netflix promised to send me an endless amount of DVDs overnight and they lied!"

No they didn't, wacko. Read their terms.

If you're a bloated beast watching DVDs 18 hours a day - and/or feverishly copying them, in which case you should be "throttled" in more ways than one - you're costing them money. Of course they're going to slow you down.

If you're a human being with some sort of life away from your TV, you'll find that Netflix has the best selection and service of any currently available rental option. Netflix also now automatically sends HD DVDs when they're available once you set up your account accordingly.

A great service that consistently sets the standard.

I have tried Netflix, Blockbuster & Wal-Mart (before Wal-Mart discontinued its DVD rental service) and basically I rate Netflix & Wal-Mart a 4.5 while Blockbuster a 3.
I had the 3 out at time unlimited subscription

All the above services “throttled” me. They started off by sending me 3 movies every week, and after a couple of months it slowed to 1-2 per week. When speaking with customer service they “All” lied and blamed slow receipt of movies on the US Post Office. Initially Netflix had more movies, but Blockbuster can now match Netflix in the volume of movies they rent. A few times Blockbuster even had a movie that Netflix didn’t and vise versa. Wal-Mart had the least amount of movies, but most of the movies I rented from Wal-Mart were in “like new” condition, while Netflix & Blockbuster had many discs that were so badly scratched as to be un-playable. I began to suspect that the defective discs were sent purposefully and was a part of their “throttling procedure.”

In conclusion, the only reason I rated Netflix a little higher is because when I closed my account, they never lied and said they had not received my last 3 movies before account closure. When, I closed my Blockbuster account they lied, stated they had not received my final 3 movies (I had their email from them showing they indeed received their movies) and charged my credit card $39 per DVD!! I filed a dispute with my credit card company and charges were eventually removed. That taught me an important lesson. If or when you plan to close your account, delete all your movies from your online queue, and the remaining DVD’s in your home should be returned in a bubble mailer with a US Postal Certificate of Mailing receipt. Your final emails from them and your “Certificate of Mailing” will be proof to your credit card company that you returned your movies.

For me, none of the companies get even an average rating of 5 because they encourage customers to sign up by advertising their “unlimited movie rentals.” Then when you read their written “terms & conditions” they state they have a right to slow up sending movies (throttle you) to you if they choose. I am done with them all….

netflix used to fantastic :( i've been a customer for 4-5 years, with a brief test of blockbuster in between and have had just about every plan. i used to hype them to everyone, because they were great, now they're only marginally better than blockbuster. i like to rent lots of movies with fast turn around. i play dvds most of the day at work in the background while working as a graphic artist (yes it is a nice luxury), anyway here's a breakdown of netflix...

turn around: it used to be great, 2-4 days total, so i could often get two rotations in a week. as explained earlier, this is extremely important to me and now it's once a week or longer. i have also noticed dvds are now coming from different parts of the country instead of locally, as they always have. as a side note, it does not matter which plan, as i have switched them around from 3-8 dvds at once.

quality of discs (scratches, cracks, etc.): until recently, i never received a dvd that didn't play, in the last three months i've received two cracked dvds and one severely scratched dvd that wouldn't play at all.

selection/availability: has been very good, except for the above mentioned delays in turn around time in the last six months. any mainstream dvds have always been available in a timely manner.

billing/customer service: no real complaints, except for my last billing cycle. though i received repeated emails and a message at the website, that my credit card was about to expire and it would delay my receiving future dvds, they billed it anyway and it went through. being less than happy with recent turn around time, i was in no hurry to give them updated information, while weighing my options. not a huge deal, but a lil scary.

... maybe netflix is getting to be a little too big and corporate, listening to their bean counters and not what their customers want. if you consider they spend $300 million a year on postage (see wikipedia), every delay saves them money on their bottom line. if you are too lazy to go to the video store (my reason for initially using them) and don't care about week-long(er) turn around, pay your money to netflix. i'm giving them another month to speed things up or i'm done once and for all.

What bothers me the most is the fact, I'm using them, and yet there JUNK MAIL! still comes to my home. Now since there on TV all the time, on tons of websites, and in your mail, I'm lucky to get my DVD's within a week! I'm going to stay loyal just a little bit longer with them, but if they don't get there act together fast. I'll give my money to more professional people.

I've been an on-and-off subscriber for over two years. I switch to Blockbuster or Wal-mart for a month or two every once in a while to see who is better, but always return to Netflix.

Netflix has a very good selection, and an extremely well designed site. I've never had any issues with lost disks, and I've only had a couple of DVDs that were scratched badly enough to be unplayable.

The main drawback of the service is, as many others have mentioned, the throttling. It won't be a concern to average users, but if you return every disk overnight, you will start seeing the effect in a couple of weeks... So Netflix isn't perfect, but it's still the best alternative out there IMHO.
Maria from New Jersey on 2007-01-02 Rates them:
I think Netflix is one of the best rental sites I have come across, and one of the best decisions we've made was to start a membership there. I have nothing to compare it to, except driving to and then lingering endlessly in the neighbourhood Blockbuster trying to find a movie I'm in the mood to watch. With Netflix, every time I remember a movie I've wanted to watch, I just go to my Queue, add it on and wait for it to arrive in my mailbox. Their selection is enormous; besides regular movies, they have old TV shows, British comedies, foreign films, brand new movies, it's amazing, a flavour for everyone and every mood.

From the reviews on the site, I've realised that you'll probably get the best experience if you're not a super-high-volume renter and you have a nearby shipping centre (ours is about 15 miles away). We've had the 3-at-a-time unlimited deal for about 6 months now and we're mainly weekend viewers. We average about 8-10 movies per month.

We've never had a problem with shipping,we mail the DVDs out on a Monday, Netflix gets them on Tue, they mail the next ones out on Tue or Wed, by Thu we're set. None of the DVDs have ever been damaged, except for one...we just ran a cloth over it and it was fine. We've never had a long wait for any movie, except the brand new ones, and only once did they send me a movie that was second in Q but we received the first in Q shortly after...

The whole process is so efficient and runs like clockwork, the email alerts are helpful and the rating system/reviews help too. I absolutely love it when I'm browsing movies and I come across a title that I've always wanted to watch but forgot about...and then I add it and I'm thrilled...:)My husband and I are almost done with our mental list of must-see flicks...now we have to browse for a while before finding something we really want to watch...

If you like to watch 7-8 movies in a week, maybe it wouldn't be as enjoyable a process...but if you're content with 2-3 movies a week, it's fabulous. Besides, there're a lot of things to do out there, instead of being glued to your couch watching a million movies, and waiting and worrying about why your movies are not in the mailbox yet..
:)

All in all, I love the service.

Pros: great website, a lot of titles, fast shipping

Cons: throttle (they expect every customer to watch about 8-11 movies a month doesn't matter what's your plan is even if it's 6 out at a time). My movies used to ship for a near shipping center and now it's somwwhere in the east coast and the return center also move to the east coast as well.

anyway, i guess they had to make profit, if you are renting to much then you are consider "high risk" type of customer. You know the ones that they will not able to make any profits out of. If it's the profit then why not increase the price? afraid of the competition? I don't mind paying $25 for online rental as long i receive my movies or games in 1 day and the return only took 1 day as well.

sophie from washington on 2006-12-12 Rates them:
Pros: Netflix is easy to navigate, nice to look at, and has accurate reviews. It also lists movies before they're released, so you can add them to your queue. Netflix has between a 1-4 day turnaround, depending upon whether the movie comes from a center near you. Lost sleeves or envelopes are not an issue (just stuff them all in one). There is a customer service telephone number, which you can get by sending them an email. If you decide to upgrade to a higher plan, the upgrade is prorated for the rest of the month. Netflix is generally reasonable about lost and broken disks.

Cons: If you're a high-volume renter, you will discover delays after renting more than about five times your limit per month. Upgrading your plan will help with this. Cancellations are easy, but are immediate. You do not get to finish out your subscription, if you cancel Netflix.

Comparison: Netflix and Blockbuster online are similar in service and quality. However, Netflix has a superior website. Both services far exceed Intelliflix, which is cheaper but which has a turn around of up to two weeks (both ways), operates out of tiny local shops, sends disks from the opposite end of the country from wher you are (Florida to me in Washington; California to my friend in Florida), and will charge you when they send you broken disks.

Overall: Netflix will limit your service, when shipping costs exceed your subscription plan. However, it is easier to use than Blockbuster and is superior in every way to fraudulent Intelliflix.

I agree with the posts that states Netflix throttles after awhile or if you are. I notice more and more that my DVD's are shipping from distribution centers from other parts of the country.

Anyway, I really don't care at this point! I'm all poop out on watching too many movies, since the 6 or 7 months after joining. Anyway, I got a good deal on eBay, 1 year membership for $120, that's $10 bucks per month! I'm quitting Netflix after my gig is up. No wonder America is the country of the overwieght obese FATso people. It's the lifestyle; watching movies & TV, playing video games, doing things on the computer and eating portions enough for a family, etc. Almost every activity is sedentary. I'm going to the gym before I weigh 500 pounds ...ha ha!

My take on Netflix, it's OK, the longer you stay in the service and turnaround time goes down.

NetCustomer from Massachusetts on 2006-12-04 Rates them:
I've been a netflix customer for over a year (3 DVD plan). And this is what I have noticed so far - Although the plan says "unlimited" DVDs per month, you are limited to 14 DVDs per 30 day period.

Try this experiment out - Dont rent for two weeks and then you will notice that all your DVDs arriving on time. And when you send them back, they even receive it the very next day that you posted it. Now as you get closer to the 14 rental per 30 day period mark, the DVDs mysteriously take longer to arrive (although on the membership page they say that they have posted it) or else it says that they are shipping it from the other end of the country (amazing that netflix doesnt have a copy of a DVD at any distribution centers that are closer to you) and the ones you have mailed back takes longer for them to receive. There may be genuine instances when they really dont have a DVD available or they dont receive your DVDs on time but it is definitely not a coincidence that this happens consistently when you get close to the 14 DVD mark. I have once gotten close to the 16 DVD mark and all of a sudden the next week it took them 6 days to receive 2 DVDs that I had mailed back.

So, I think it would make sense for Netflix to just say that they limit your rental to 14 per month or something instead of misleading people with the word "unlimited". I understand that they have to cover operational expenses and they have to limit people from renting too many movies. But if that is the case then they should specifically say that you are limited to renting so many movies.

Like someone said.. it is a question of trust and I cannot trust Netflix. However, I would still stick with them because it is still a good deal :)

So, for anyone believing the marketing from netflix, just remember that for a 3 DVD program you are limited to 14 DVDs per month max.

Oh by the way... if you have read netflix's terms and conditions, they have a clause that basically means that they can terminate your account without giving you any reason. So, for those people renting too many movies in a month... beware... you may lose your account at any time. :)

Because of the games with this company and a trust issue becomes a major factor. I 've been surprised at getting the new releases lately the day after their Tuesday release dates, you'll have to time your returns though in order to have a shot at getting it. The latest being MIP3. Also, I'm into more foreign flix, so they may not have some of the flix at my local distribution center. I always get my flix in order requested, NO random picks from my movies queue list.

I dock marks for mail delay. I don't know where the problem lies but I have found putting the return movie in a blue box added at least 2 days to the mail return speed. Also the comment about mailing Fri-Sunday was correct. Monday - Thursday morning, are the best days to mail. Netflix has emailed me with questionairs to determin whats the delay when I mailed a movie and when they recived it. Since this is the number one complaint it is great they are doing what they can to correct it.

Also Netflix does not have porn so to speak. Although some Forign moveis I have seen are extreamly graphic. This is a plus. It keeps the trafic at a serious level and is not some rampid porn swaping mayham. I get my porn downladed to save time. I suggust you follow suite if your looking for that.

I joined netflix in July 2006 with their three at a time plan. I have been avg about 18 movies a month. If I put my movies in with the mail at work on Monday they will have it by tuesday and a new one will show up on wednesday.

There are a few problems but it seems like it has to do with the postoffice not netflix. I have learned that mailing the disks back Friday,Saturday, or Sunday is useless because they won't get the movie back till tuesday, so you might as well just mail, it back Monday unless your near a mailbox. And if there is a holiday weekend they won't get it back till wednesday.

The only things I wish netflix would fix is not renting videogames. which would be killer feature for me. I tried gamefly but because they ship from cali the turnaround time was over 5 days. The other thing is add a button on the site, so you can say that you've mailed a movie back and they will send a new one out the next day instead of waiting. Even if they just did it for one disk at a time that would be nice.

My normal rentals are mostly tv shows, which include cartoons, anime, scifi, documentary. The availability of the items in my queue are almost always "Now" as I rarely pick out any just released movies, which there might be a longer wait for because everybody wants a copy. If there is a new movie out I want to watch I just put it at the priority 5-8 and by the time I go thru the other movies, which can take me a week or so it should be past the rush. My queue is currently at 102, so it's not like there isn't something else I want to watch.

Overall it's been a good value for me and I like it.

I had not realized how long I had been with Netflix until I started reading this page and decided to look it up using Netflix Freak (an excellent 3rd party application). Wow, 2.5 years....

Unlike many of the people on this board I am giving Netflix.com 8 out of 10 stars. I really enjoy their service, website, and turn selection. That's not to say that I'm not getting throttled down, most assuredly I am, but that is to be expected with any DVD service if you are a heavy renter. I've been with Blockbuster, Intelliflix, and Netflix at different times and have noticed the same issued between all three (though more so with Intellifix).

I find Netflix's ease of use, intuitive website, recommedations, and ability to have multiple queues puts them heads above most of the other services that I've seen and used. I am presently using the 8 at a time plan and feel that I am getting my money's worth, though I would love to be getting that one day turn around again, but I don't really need all those movies here at one time. Of all the companies presently out there with a DVD rental service I definitely feel that Netflix is number 1 with Blockbuster a seriously close number 2 (thought I never use those free rentals).

To sum up, slow down is everywhere and maybe that's not a bad thing, judging from the responses here too many people need to take a moment and calm down and enjoy life rather than stressing over whether their movies arrive in 1 day or 3. Take the extra time to go walk in a park or eat out somewhere new.

PS: Before you ask, I am not an employee, but I did love Netflix's company so much that I am now a stockholder.
