QwikFliks Review

QwikFliks (no, that is their real spelling) has been around for 3 years. They claim that 'We're the fastest growing DVD movie rental service on the planet' but many companies could be classed in this category ;)

They are one of the lesser known rental companies. Their site isn't the best to look at, but it is fast and browsing is relatively pain-free with good sorting options. They offer a multitude of plans, actually maybe overkill. They used to give a price guarantee that 'for as long as you're member your price will never go up!'. So in 2035 when everybody else is paying $280 a month for their rental you'll be the lucky one with a measly $19.95...

They also have 'rapid return plans' which sound a bit on the expensive side. For instance, 4 dvd's per month = $10.95, 8 per month = $16.95. That sounds like a lot of money. Actually, their plans are just too complicated...maybe they are meant to confuse you.

DVD's are sent from Santa Margarita in California.

QwikFliks Customer Reviews
Mark from Cincinnati, OH on 2007-06-19 Rates them:
It hurts me to give QwikFliks a rating of 1. Please consider this review as a rating of ZERO. I joined because they were the only DVD rental company that could supply the rare movie "They Might Be Giants" (the George C Scott movie). Even when I cleared everything but that title from my Que, they were unable to send it to me. I also had similar problems listed by others as to delivery. From Cincinnati it would take OVER A MONTH to clear a movie that I sent back. The last movies I returned were sent via Priority Mail. It's been over two weeks now, and they still haven't cleared them. This is definitely a fraudulent company. I have sent an email notifying them of my membership cancellation, and will have to work with my credit card company to list their charges as fraudulent. Anyone considering a class action suit against them .... sign me up.
John from San Jose, CA on 2007-06-05 Rates them:
My experience is very similar to the ones above. Horrible company. It's amazing they have stayed in business as long as they have, as someone else stated. Absolutely fraudulent practices. When you go to cancel they will force you to agree to pay the full amount for the movies which you have already returned and you know darn well they have received. They claim the cancellation agreement is legally binding and non-disputable. I seriously doubt that. I've seen some pretty shady stuff but these guys are about the worst I've ever come across.
Mark from Maryland on 2007-05-01 Rates them:
Customer Service Non-responsive, movies not shipped, nor accounted for upon return. Currently disputing all charges with my credit company (of which I expect they will attempt to charge for the "outstanding" movies). The fact they are still in business is amazing. If you want to battle their poor system, working with your credit company for a few months, go for it. But if you value your time and actually want to watch movies, I'd recommend Blockbuster with the in-store returns.
Karl from Wisconsin on 2007-04-26 Rates them:
I joined QwikFliks about one year ago. Initially, the company lived up to it's billing. Movies were sent in a timely manner. I was satisfied and continued my membership.

Two months ago, however, my experience with this company changed drastically. Movies that I had watched and returned were not reflected as returned on my account. Weeks went by with my constant e-mailing to my personal customer service person, Dawn, the CSS Manager, and QwikFliks Support regarding the problems with my account. Not only were my e-mails not returned, but one day I received the next movies on my QwikList without warning. This occured two days before my membership renewal date. Now I had six movies outstanding with the company. Three in my possession and three which I returned, but hadn't been marked as returned by the company.

Consequently, if I had wanted to cancel my membership, as had been my intention, I would have been charged for six unreturned movies! Well, I fell into the company's trap and was charged another months membership fee; far less of a financial hit than purchasing six unwanted movies. I thought, okay, I'll simply return my movies PDQ and when those are marked as returned I'll cancel my membership. Well here I am, two days from my automatic monthly renewal and the movies that I returned at the beginning of the month, some three weeks ago, have not been marked returned on my account. The company is holding those movies hostage hoping to at least charge me for a membership renewal and at best get me to pay for the all of the movies that I have not "returned".

These practises are fraudulent at the very least. I have notified, in writing, the Better Business Bureas of California and Wisconsin, as well as the Attorney General of Wisconsin about QwikFliks criminal practises. The Attorney General's office responded to me that it had received numerous complants similar to mine regarding QwikFliks business practises and is following up.

Unfortunately, I have to wait for QwikFliks to charge me for another month of membership fees before I can declare the charges as fraudulent to my credit card company and be done with them, hopefully, forever.

Also, the phone number listed on the QwikFliks web site has been DISCONNECTED!!!

Please, for your sake, DO NOT join QwikFliks!!

I joined qwikfliks AFTER reading this posting. I returned 3 movies 2 weeks ago & they still haven't received them. USPS says it should take 2-3 days to get from Arizona to California. I have emailed them 5 times, no response. I had to cancel my credit card so they cannot bill me again. I belong to both Netflix & Blockbuster & even though they have their qwirks, they are 100% better than QwikFliks. Beware of Qwikfliks!!!!
cammy from Pennsylvania on 2007-03-02 Rates them:
If I could rate QwikFliks at a 0, I would. I have been a member since October, only because I can't seem to get my account straightened out and cancelled. They don't reply to requests for customer support. I think my customer support specialist has been on a coffee break since December. I have received broken DVD's, empty mailers, and even an addressed outer sheet from a mailer with no DVD or mailer attached. My latest gripe is that my LAST rental was returned over 2 weeks ago and still shows as a rental outstanding. I have no doubt it will remain outstanding long after they take yet another credit card payment on my account, and I would be wasting my time to email the customer service department that just isn't there. Their customer service policy is nothing short of horrible. I would not recommend this service to anyone.
Robert from Fort Worth on 2007-01-21 Rates them:
The average waiting time is much too long for this service with very slow turnaround from order to shipment fulfillment. Unless you live close this process can take up to 2 weeks. Not good if your membership allows and you want to watch up to 8 or more movies. Why would anyone sign up for more than 2 when its foolish that's the most you should expect from my exp. Slow service, unfavorable cancellation terms (your movies have to be all check-in to complete it), and too many movies even hard too find movies that are IN DEMAND (you are likely never to get them) are all reasons to stay away from this rental service.
Bob from Casselberry, FL on 2007-01-10 Rates them:
got 1 email from them when I was asking about delivery times. signed up 12/26 because they had 4 movies listed that blockbuster & netflix didn't have. the website showed the first two shipped 12/27. after a week no movies so I emailed them (Dawn & CSS Manager) no response (8 emails). checked BBB for them. many complaints (they have an F rating. found 2 phone numbers. one disconnected the other listed to a real estate office. I did a chargeback with my CC, filed a complaint with the BBB in California & also with the postal inspector. I emailed them 6 more times telling them all that. no response. now if I try & cancel, they still show 2 movies out & they want to charge my CC for the full amount. this is a bogus company.
David from Durham, NC on 2007-01-05 Rates them:
I only joined in mid December but it already feels like a scam. First, they weren't upfront about where they ship from - one would assume, like the good guys, that they had multiple shipping centers. Second, it took 8 days for my first moves to arrive. I decided to cancel, returned my 4 movies priority mail with USPS delivery confirmation. Now, nine days after mailing back the DVDs, they have yet to credit me with their return and, two days after writing, have still not responded to a CSS email. I'm cancelling my credit card so they can't rip me off any more.
john from sacramento on 2006-11-28 Rates them:
A big joke! Average cost of a dvd rental about seven dollars. Absolutely nothing of a redeeming nature I can say about Qwikfliks. I wish I had read a review before signing up.
Robert from California on 2006-11-27 Rates them:
SSSUUUUPPPPEEEERRRR S_L_O_W service. don't bother with these guys. They sit on the DVD for at least a week before processing returns. You can have 50+ titles in your queue and still nothing shipps. Takes 2 weeks for a mailed movie to get "returned". While the rapid return is a great idea, I often had returned mailed the movie back before the orginal movie had been processed. I live about 6 hrs from LA, where they are located, mail takes 2 days to get there.
Sue from Florida on 2006-11-09 Rates them:
I'm surprised there is not a class action lawsuit against this company. I signed up with Qwikfliks and promptly filled my queue with ten movies. The first two were supposedly shipped the day I signed up, but they never showed up in my mailbox. After seven days, I contacted my customer support "specialist" (Jeff) about the missing DVD's. He never responded, but, surprise, surprise, the missing movies were suddenly reported as returned. I cancelled my membership right away. These guys charged me for a month of service, but I never received anything from them. I very seriously doubt they even had the movies in stock since the movies were indie. Their imaginery huge selection was what drew me to them in the first place. I really wish I had read these reviews before I signed up. I had a bad feeling about them based on the website design and the weird "choose your CSS" thing, but I ignored my instincts. I guess you live and you learn.

PS - I think a rating of one is extremely generous for this company. We should be able to give zero's or negatives.

If I could rate this company in the negative, I would. The WORST service that I have experienced. I did the same as others in this board. I only signed up because they had two titles that no other service had. (Cherry Orchard & The Seagull) Both took about a week to get to me, however I sent the movies back going on two weeks ago after recieving the form email from Jeff of
Hi,
This is Jeff, your QwikFliks' Customer Service Specialist (CSS).
It has been a while since we received any movies back from you, so I thought I should bring this to your attention. Although the QwikFliks' motto is "keep as long as you like" (with a 4 months maximum), it obviously benefits you to watch and return them as quickly as possible. We realize that there are many factors that could be happening here, so hopefully we can provide some assistance. (form letter- for space I cut some of it out)
If there is a situation that you wish to discuss with me, just email me by logging on to your account. Go to the "MY ACCOUNT" page by using the link that is available in the upper right of every page. Here you will see my name and a link to send me an email. Once I receive it, I'll be able to assist you. If you still have the DVDs and need more mailers, I'm happy to send you more, just let me know. If you would prefer to mail them on your own, just mail them to PO Box 9088, Mission Viejo, CA 92690-9088.
P.S. - Be sure to tell your friends to join QwikFliks and select me as their CSS during sign up! Thanks Again!
-Yeah right!!
I figured that they wanted the movies back so I sent them, with plenty of time to cancel, or so I thought. I just passed the membership time and was charged again for another month. So now if I want to cancel, I cannot unless I want to pay an additional $40 for the two DVDs.
They talk about Blockbuster and Netflix being a scam but they are the true scammers. They will probably never get the DVDs here is what they wrote.
Hello Jeff,
I sent the movies back over a week ago and they still appear outstanding in my queue. I only have one day left before I am charged again and find it very convenient that they have not been counted in my queue. I.. believe that I will cancel if I am charged again before the movies appear in my queue.
Thank you
The response :
I can understand your frustrations. I want to assure you that we check all DVDs in on the day they are received from the United States Postal Service. It is not our intention to delay this as it only upsets customers and customers are very valuable to us.
Jeff
Suuuuuuuuure... The last money they will get from me however. Please beware!!
I told them to cancel so they probably won't ever really "get" the movies- my prediction.
Damon from NJ on 2006-05-05 Rates them:
Absolutely, positively, without a doubt the worst company with the worst business practices I have ever come across. They continue and continue to send me e-mails stating that my account is past due and I must update my credit card blah, blah, blah.
Here is what happpened. After coming to realize that all movies are available until you need them then all are "in demand" etc, I decided to do something about it. 13 days go by and they still claim to have not received my returns, so I say that thanks but I think I am going to cancel because living in nj is just too far away to be worth it. Well, if you think you can cancel from this company you are in for one hell of a surprise. Since they claim to have not "received" my movies I cannot cancel (that was a month ago). So I have to cancel my credit card because I knew they were going to try to bill me again (which they tried). Now I am shut out of my account so I cannot cancel through there website if I wanted to. I ask them to call me over and over again to straighten this out and they refuse to talk to me. They just keep on sending canned e-mails stating the same thing over and ever. A vicous circle from which you cannot get out of. It looks as if I will have to block them from sending these e-mails. I plead with you do not get involved with these back stabbers.
Mark from Burbank, CA on 2006-04-07 Rates them:
I only subscribed to QuikFliks because they claimed to have a rare DVD that no other rental service has (Black Like Me), and it was "Available," so I did the minimal 2-at-a-time, 4 rentals/month plan and put it at the top of my queue. I was filling out my queue with alternatives when I saw that 2 movies had already been marked as "Shipped," only 5 minutes into the process, not giving me time to even order the queue properly. Then I notice that the movie I really wanted was not one of the two "Shipped" and suddenly had a wait. Hmm.

The site claims that shipping time is 1-2 days for Southern California (I'm just outside of LA), and usually 3 days for most others, although they allow for 4-6 days to the Midwest and the East. It took a good 5-6 days for me to get my movies. I sent the first one back after keeping it for a week. Coincidentally, I returned a Netflix DVD in the same manner (through a mailbox at my job, which I've used for a year) at the same time. Netflix received their movie a day later. A week went by before I emailed QuikFliks to see why they hadn't sent another film. Their much touted customer service reps responded (after 2 days) that they never received it and even said that they can't control theft within their company(!). They "graciously" said that they'd ship the next DVD in my queue. I made sure to check the availability of Black Like Me before I emailed QuikFliks, and it was again "Available". After they decided it was time to ship the next DVD, it suddenly had another wait.

Because QuikFliks has a policy that they must physically have the DVDs before you can cancel or else they'll charge you (A GOOD SIGN TO RUN AWAY), I wrote to make sure that their theft-related delay would not affect my ability to cancel, since by the time I received the next DVD and returned it, I would likely have been on the plan for over a month and into the next billing cycle. When I mentioned canceling, their tone changed and they put the blame on me, saying that I should be careful where I mail their movies.

I have mailed back all movies, but I fully expect that they will try to charge me, although I will dispute it will my credit card company. Since then, I've done some research on QuikFliks and found customers who've had similar issues. Apparently, the company makes a habit of touting movies as "Available" until it comes time to ship. I seriously doubt they even have Black Like Me or many other title they use to boost their proclaimed inventory. And they intentionally delay shipment and reporting of receipt (if they don't outright "lose" the DVD altogether) because it's in their best interest if you don't get the DVDs back to them before you cancel (and you WILL cancel).
Tia from Palm Springs, CA on 2006-04-03 Rates them:
Since my comments of 1/24/'06, my experience with Qwikfliks spiraled into the toilet. I would absolutely NOT recommend this pathetic excuse for a "service". As noted in other reviews, they take forever to credit returns and send a new title, have their system rigged to prevent you from seeing your most wanted titles, CSRs that aren't worth their weight in salt and a cancellation policy that costs you money to quit their junky so called service.

They have a "rapid return" option which supposedly gets you another DVD sent before they receive the DVD in your possession back in the mail. Ha! As soon as you report a DVD "rapid returned", almost all of the titles in your queue suddenly become "unavailable". I took screenshots less than a minute apart showing almost all the titles in my queue as "available", then clicked the "rapid return" button and voila, mysteriously now almost all of my titles are "in demand".

Also, if you have more than 10 DVDs in your queue, you will rarely, if ever, receive a title from your top ten. I had movies that were in my top 10 since I started with Qwikfliks that were never sent. And it's not like my top ten choices were hot new releases, either. For example, "A Beautiful Mind" was on my list since day one and was never sent. When did that come out, 2001 or so?

My customer service rep was less than worthless, coming up with one lame excuse after another as to why they couldn't deliver.

Also, be aware that their cancellation policy requires all DVDs to be returned AND in their possession before they close your account otherwise they continue to charge you.

This means you need to send back your last DVD's with some kind of proof of receipt to ensure that don't try to rip you off for another month's worth of charges. Interestingly, when I returned my last DVD's via certified mail, it was the ONLY time they showed my DVD's being received in two days as compared to the 4-7 days they usually took. Also, if you are on a fixed number of DVDs per month plan like I was, this means you won't get all the DVD's you are entitled to when you cancel.

the worst service - the rudest customer services reps ...they bad mouth NETFLIX- I had both services at once - I wanted to try qwikfliks mostly for the adult selection, which they charged you an extra 5.95 for and of course no selections were ever available.
With NETFLIX I received 12 movies in the same time qwikfliks sent me 2 - because my acct was bnever updated when I sent movies back even though they would send me an e-mail that is was back and I sent them 5 e-mails asking them to update my acct and send me a movie - when ALL the movies on my list were listed as available- when they finally showed the movie back on my acct - amazingly NONE of the movies were available then... as for custmer service - this was the response I got :

Your service is horrible - if you are going to compare yourself to
NETFLIX, you may want to greatly improve your service.
I have received 6 movies from NETFLIX for every one you have sent.
You got one movie back on 3/7 but it took you 7 days to update it on my
acct and about another 5 to send me a new movie ...I only received 1
new
movie from you since 2/21/06.
I will be cancelling at the end of the month.

Very poor service. Web site down for two days for "maintenance". Slow shipments, slow confirmation of returns. These are just SOME of the problems I experienced. The problem, I suspect, is that the CEO's day-job at Burger King is getting in the way. My recommendation: use NetFlix.
Tia from Palm Springs, CA on 2006-01-24 Rates them:
I've been with QF since 11'05 and the jury is still out on my feelings towards this company. I'm on a 2 out, 6 moviemo service for around $15.

Turn around times have been only average, disappointing since I live within 90 miles from their office although this may be a USPO issue.

Movie availability, likewise is average to poor. I consistently receive titles from my queue outside my top 10 requests. I received an email in response to a complaint I made regarding this indicating that there is 'a problem with the rapid return service, but we don't know when it will be resolved'. The CSR told me to let her know when I was returning dvd(s) and she would try to get picks from my top then sent to me, which she did. However, this is certainly not convenient for me.

Now for the last 24 hours, their website has been offline. Not very impressive.

Problem is I've tried Netflix and Blockbuster, both equally mediocre services at best. I think there's still room in the industry for a company to step up with a service that really delivers results, not just empty promises.

I only continue to rent from Qwikfliks because it is the only rental place that still carries most new releases in full screen. Otherwise I would cancel as fast as possible. Very slow with many many useless excuses. Also don't understand why all movies show as available until a movie is reported under rapid return, then ALL the movies instantly change to unavailable. I also rent from Netflix otherwise I'd be old and gray before I saw any movie.
Joanne from Methuen, MA on 2006-01-23 Rates them:
My queue shows movies as being available, but when they are ready to ship they are all "in demand" and not available. I have yet to see a new release movie and I have been a member for 2 months now. Movies are taking a week to arrive and once my monthly limit has been reached my account is on hold. Your "personal" customer service rep takes 3-4 days to get back to you. Not a good site at all...going to switch to another on-line rental....that is if I can get on the site to cancel my membership...the site has been down for the past 3 days.

When I paid $19.95 I got 8 movies a month, so I upgraded to 12 movies a month for $23.95, then after they sent me six movies they said that was my limit for the month. When I sent them several emails as to why they ripped me off I got no replies. I even tried signing in and computer said company does not exit. I would highly recommend everyone stay away from QwikFliks as a rip-off and fly-by-night operation.

This is the worst online rental company I have experienced. Two movies in one week of membership with an excuse that my customer contact had a death in the family(like I really needed to know this). Don't believe their quote of great customer service...their response was typically form-letter and offered me to switch to Rapid Return (which required another month of membership). Don't be a fool!
