StarFlix Review

Starflix is one of the more attractive looking websites for Canadian renters. With a 2-week free trial it's a great way of finding out if the service suits you. Surprisingly, I found the search fast and quite accurate.

They have 5 different plans. 2 basic plans are $9.99 (2 dvd's out in a month) and $14.99 (4 dvd's out a month). In all honesty, you get better value at blockbusters for those first plans. Their 'unlimited' plans are much better - 3 out at a time for $22.95.

I signed up... all was well for a few months. I then had to change my Credit card number for other reason. I called starflix about 10times and left maybe 3 messages as their Voice mail box is always full. I sent about 20 email... and got one reply back, asking me to email my new Credit card number... I replied to them with "no" as it is not secure to do so via email... and now it has been about a month and still no action from starflix... I just emailed and told them, essentially to Piss off, and i would send back the last DVD i had from them.

Starflix is a total fraud and scam which is currently being investigated by the RCMP and Interpol. I tried Starflix for 3 months. After recieving and returning eight movies during that time, I cancelled my account. They continued to charge my credit card monthly payments. I wrote and told them to stop, and they said that I hadn't returned a movie. I replied that they must be mistaken, as I had returned the movie and had recieved confirmation as such. Starflix replied they would continue to charge my credit card account 30 per month.

I told my credit card company not to accept charges on my card from them and soon recieved a letter from Starflix's collection agent for $209! Bear in mind, they had been recieving monthly payments (for which they provided no service at all)for eight months after I cancelled my account with them and they sent no movies at all during that time! It is a shame they haven't been shut down yet, and that more people keep getting scammed.
Christian Beausoleil from Oshawa on 2008-03-07 Rates them:
I have been a customer of zip.ca, rogers.ca and starflix.ca for well over a year. So far, For all 3 services, my only complaint is that you should keep your list short because they will ALWAYS send you the least popular films first. Among a mixture of new releases and older titles, I almost never received new releases. I'd still have to go out to Blockbuster to rent them. Which defeats the purpose.

But... I'm actually here to complain about Starflix.

1. READ THE CONTRACT before signing: Starflix has put ALL the responsibility on the consumer. I have cancelled with them in January of 2008 and they continue to attempt to charge my monthly fee of $30.69 because of a movie that they claim has not been received. Which was mailed back in June of 2007. Between that time I only received 1 email notification. I now have threatened them to take me to court, had to put a stop payment with Visa and consult with the Consumer Protection Branch (Ministry of Government and Consumer Services).

2. Damaged DVDs: With zip or rogers, if a DVD is damaged, you simply mark on the label and send it back. Within a few days, they mail you another one with no extra charge. BUT, with Starflix, you need to write it on the disc and/or label and mail it back... then... put it back on your list and wait weeks to months before you see it again.

3. Your order list: With zip and rogers, you can shuffle you choices around and continue to add as many titles as you wish in your "ziplist" (even though they only mail you titles within your top 40). You can also "park" titles that you don't want to order right away. And... You can also include titles that have not been released yet. BUT... with Starflix, you only get to choose 40 titles. That's it! You can remove them. And if you need to shuffle them around, you need to move 1 title up or down, reload the page, wait, and move it again. Very time consuming, and annoying.

4. Searches: Zip and rogers both have a great search engine and offer great suggestions that closely resemble your search. BUT... With Starflix, your title has to be specific, the complete, exact title. And still then, I found no titles in the search but was able to locate them when browsing. Also, I found new releases (after failed searches) in the "Coming Soon" category when we were weeks past the new release date. And... a few times, they did not have a popular new release so I had to go back to Blockbuster.

5. Customer support: Starflix has never answer their phones or return calls.

6. Shipping time: Although this may the fault of Canada Post... but I found that Starflix took longer than zip or rogers to mail me my titles.

7. Extra stuff: zip and rogers both have extra little features, like forums, trailers to view, you can purchase titles, watch other movie clips like features of last night's hockey features, etc., Also, zip and rogers both have a check box next tou your rented titles where you can let them know in advance that you have mailed them back to help speed up the process. Starflix has nothing like that.

total scam! I signed on to a free trial period, got no email back regarding login. So I was never able to login as a memeber or make a dvd list. so I email them and said cancel my account. 3 weeks later they charge my credit account! I was never even able to log in! I never made any list and I never got any dvds! why am I being charged?
because I was never able to login I have no way to cancel.
I don't even know my membership id#.
Dont give them your credit info they are theives! they never return your emails and never answer the phone.
I can't believe that a company like this is still in business.
Herman from Prince George, BC on 2007-12-17 Rates them:
Do not use this so called service. They have no customer service to speak of. I have had nothing but problems with them. I got the DVD's ok, kind-of, but that is it.
1. 2 week trial was not working for first week, asked for a week extension. They said No.
2. Got a defective DVD. Sent it back but did not get another or a credit.
3. Did not receive a DVD but got a confirmation of sent. Sent e-mail asking about it. A week later I get a confirmation of DVD received(by them)I never got it and therefore never returned it. Suspect it never left their warehouse. Sent e-mail asking if I get a credit. No response.

Sent second e-mail asking if they were interested in keeping me as a customer and repeated the difficulties I had. No respones.

A week and a half ago I went to my account and cancelled, send my feedback (same as above) No response, but got a monthly bill on my creditcard today.

Called my CC company and asked if I could block them. They said I should have recieved a cancellation confirmation. They could then act on that if I still got a bill 15 days after that. Never got the confirmation. No way to get one unless you do a screen capture but that does not have a date stamp.

Tried to call them but got voice mail and even that was full so I couldn't leave a message

These guys are dirt. Cancel cancel canel... or never start.

Good luck. FYI, I was nice enought in my correspondence with them, but I have had it up to here....
Julia from Hamilton on 2007-07-30 Rates them:
Terrible, terrible service. It takes them anywhere between 5 to 10 days to process DVDs and after the free trial period I was charged $30 for DVDs they claim I returned too late, but I actually returned within the free trial period. Unbelieveable. On top of that, after I cancelled my membership, I was, without being asked, subscribed to one of their billing plans. Why any DVD rental would charge me for a monthly payment plan if I'm not even a member of their service anymore is beyond me. Customer service is sloppy. It's impossible to get anyone on the phone, there's only a voice mailbox and it's always full, and e-mail addresses, but it takes them at least a week to respond and when they do, they dodge questions and rarely tell you what you want to know.

So now, I'm stuck with having to pay $40 for DVDs I returned on time and a membership plan I never asked for.

I've done business online for five years now, and I never, EVER had this lousy an experience before.

On top of everything, their inventory is pathetic, I could barely find a few interesting movies to rent during the free trial. Had I known what I'd wind up paying, I wouldn't have bothered.

Stay away from this one. I'm now on Zip and they're a far better service with more reasonable prices and none of this drama.

Renters beware! Nearly on verge of a minor claims lawsuit involving this company. They have continued to charge my credit card (3 months now) after I cancelled the subscriptionn and sent everything back. If you decide to cancel with them, make sure you get ALL confirmations mails first, or they will use the famous "not received" arguement to keep taking money. Looked good at first, raw deal in the end.
Lori from Fort St. John, BC on 2006-10-06 Rates them:
I tried starflix for a month after the trial. In that month, due to mail, it took over a week to receive and send a dvd. So, in the long run, I wasn't getting my money's worth. And then I cancelled the subscription, after sending all the movies back. I received the proper confirmation emails about the returns, so I assumed they were received, and deleted these emails. Well, a month later, I received a charge on my credit card. I emailed them, and was told that I hadn't returned one of the movies, so that charge was going to stick. I told them to look again, because I know I returned it, and received the confirmation. They emailed me back saying that it was impossible for me to receive that email because I still have the movie. That just prompted me to make sure that people knew what it was all about, to make sure it didn't happen to anyone else.
bryce from calgary on 2006-08-29 Rates them:
I recently cancelled my 3 movies account with starflix for most of the above posted reasons but took some unorthodox steps to make sure that my account was not billed after the fact. First I called my credit card company and listed the card as lost/stolen. This means that the current charge number will no longer be in use. Then I emailed Starflix and indicated that I was cancelling their dvd service as today. I indicated that no further correspondence would be forthcoming and that the current charge card had been declared lost/stolen. In future I intent to sign up with online companies with a card specific to this kind of charge. Remember it is always easier to cancel the credit card first before dumping the dvd service. To date I have not had any further correspondence with starflix. I can only assume that they finally got the message. As far as I can see this is the only proper way to exit an online agreement and not incur extra costs.
Tim from Summerland, B.C. on 2006-07-04 Rates them:
Don’t go for a free 14 day trial with Starflix. I did and the service was very slow in getting and returning the DVDs. In the end when I cancelled my subscription by email at day 13 of the trial and sent back the DVDs, they claimed to not have received them in the time allowed under the Terms and Conditions and charged my credit card for a one month’s subscription! I only received one shipment of DVDs in 2 weeks. Some free trial!
Chris from Montreal on 2006-04-11 Rates them:
I have tried all sorts of online rental services. This one has a reasonable selection and when I called with a problem on my c-card they were very polite and changed everything no problem.
The shipping times are the same as everywhere else and I like that they have Quebec films too.
Nathan from Canada on 2006-04-06 Rates them:
I became a Starflix customer on dec 1, 2005 and remained a customer for three months. in that three months i think i only received 1 new release they always seemd to send movies from the bottom of my list. It seemed they were always playing the mail. it seemed to take longer and longer to send back and recieve the next movie. the problem started when i wanted to close my account. they dragged their feet and ended up charging me another full months subscription with out me being able to rent any more movies. sound like a late fee? the second you close your account your login dosn't work and you get the bad news a month later on your credit card. i have emailed and phoned never have i ever gotten a real person. out of about 4 emails i got one response. saying they would open my account for me but as far as explaining why, nothing. Under the access to information act of canada i requested some info and have gotten no response.

The Starflix website claims to "30,000 titles", "virtually every DVD available for rental in Canada", "Canada's largest online DVD movie rental service", etc., seem to be wildly exaggerated (to put it politely). You can find my full notes on this at:

i just switched to starflix from zip.

i never had any complaints with zip until they changed their plans. it's no longer unlimited rentals. i rent at least 4-5 movies a week, now i have to pay an unreasonable price every month. so i said screw it. if they dont have the integrity to keep their promises, i aint dealing with em.

i just switched to STARFLIX.COM and im quite satisfied so far. their inventory is slightly smaller than that of zip, but still there's lots of titles i wanna watch, and most importantly, it's UNLIMITED RENTALS as they promised.

a lying, cheating company like zip should be sued their pants off.
Jack from Toronto on 2005-09-21 Rates them:
They've vastly improved their customer service in the last few months. Beforehand it was very difficult to speak to a "real" person. I find this is the case with the other online rental companies that I dealt with.

I now am able to speak to a customer service rep everytime I call. It's always the same person but who cares?
