Tesco Review

Tesco is one of the leading brand names in the UK. They have partnered with LoveFilm to bring online dvd rental to the masses. Their website isn't as easy on the eye as some, but it has improved since I used them in 2005. The genres and browsing are decent and they are after all using LoveFilm's huge range of titles. It loads fast and isn't cluttered when adding titles and managing your account.

The plans tesco offer are very well priced. The 3-discs out at a time comes in at £14. A 2 week free trial will let you see how quick they are to get movies to you. A cheaper set of plans, aimed at the low renter, offers 3 rentals per month at £6 and 4 for £7.47. Slightly cheaper than your local video store.

i had a two week free trial with tesco, then when i checked my bank account the had charged me two days into the free trial, so i cancelled my free trial and asked for my money back they said no, so i sent them another email saying there must be a law against this because it is called stealing, they soon gave me the money back , they also were slow getting the DVDs to you and there customer service is rude
Avoid don't even try them
Tim from Stoke-On-Trent on 2008-02-09 Rates them:
THIS DVD RENTAL IS RUBISH DONT SIGN-UP!!!!!

My Accounts on Cancellation Pending and they said they need all the disc back before cancellation and if i dont get them back before 14th February i will be chareged as normal monthly! Anyway i sent the two games back in post and now they re saying they have only recieved one game. So i told them ive sent it off with the other game and they said it might have been lost in the post so they will send me a V91 and they sent me an email saying...

"We would like to remind you that failure to help us with our enquiries will result in £25 being deducted from your account if we do not receive the form back from you."

£25 THE GAMES ONLY WORTH £10

And if this take 10days to come they will proberlly charge me monthly just to take the PxxS.

They no im cancelling my account but they keep sending me e-mails like..

Please add DVD titles to your selection

We've noticed your currently have no DVD or games in your rental list.

My question is why do they need me to add films and games. So they can keep charging me until this game turns up.
And i bet when this V91 turns ups they will ask questions like did i get a postal receipt and when i tick NO thats it £25 fine.

ANOTHER THING: When i was waiting for a game to come they sent the wrong one: Dragonball Z came and i diddent even have it on my list.

Don't trust Tesco DVD STAY-AWAY

I used Tesco for awhile, they took £20 from my account 13 months ago allegedly for a dvd they say they never received back. I filled in forms they said they never received them I filled in more forms and waited still no refund but they acknowledged the forms I sent back.Since then I have had promises and excuses Tesco's is a JOKE I bet faded 'popstars' won't have to wait 13 months for their £1000000 days work...I am taking this to tradinf standards
Slawek from Leominster on 2007-08-05 Rates them:
Just a quick follow-up to my last post. Well, 2 and a half months later things didn't improve at all. If anything, they got only worse (but only slightly, if that's of any consolation). The turnaround is painfully slow. It takes them far longer to acknowledge that they have received disks back and far longer to allocate new ones. And even after they have been allocated they almost never turn up the next day - I have to wait 2 days in 90% of cases. I guess I should switch them long ago but now my patience run out. Avoid if you can.
Slawek from Leominster on 2007-05-15 Rates them:
Well, I was very impressed at their service at first. Had two weeks of free trial and switched to 2 unlimited dvd's shortly afterwards. Was tempted to pay upfront to get a discount but fortunatelly thought better of it. Anyway, for about month and a half their turnaround was brilliant - got disc, watched it, sent back and the next day after I sent it back I had next one dispatched. Brilliant, isn't it? But things changed and now they wait with sending disc to me about a day or two - I can see that my account has one disc 'awaiting allocation' but none is allocated until the next day (or even a day later!). Wrote them email, saying they got worse and in response I was said that 'we have 24 hours to allocate a new disc'. I guess I'll finish with them but then who I should to sign up to? That's a question.
james from newcastle on 2007-05-01 Rates them:
I signed up for a 60 day free trial of the dvd rental service. Soon after signing up and adding a few games

to my account (5 mins) i realised that with the account that i had created i was unable to rent games. i

therefore changed the account type to one that allows games and was charged imediatly and told that there

will be no refund.

I find this disgrasefull especially as i quieried it on the same night, before anything could have been

dispatched.

Absolute rubbish service, strongly advise that you stay away from them because of there rubbish customer

service attitude.

Received 4 discs since joining. First one was the wrong disc. Second was scratched and unplayable. Next two unplayable. Not worth the hassle. BE WARNED!
Silvana from London on 2007-04-23 Rates them:
I wish I had made a research before I joined. I agree with all the bad comments posted here, ie
-good while you're on free trial, bad when you start paying
-appalling customer services
-discs get lost usually and they blame the post service
-discs condition is terrible
If there was a 0 rating, I would use it.
Diane from Devon on 2007-04-14 Rates them:
I've been a member for about a year - started well and has got steadily worse but I had I foolishly signed up for advance payment (ie money off). My biggest complaint is the appalling state of the DVDs I receive: dirty, marked cracked. The one I received today even even had unidentifiable bits stuck all over it! And the priority system is a complete joke. Someone asked me recently if Tesco DVD rental was any good and when I said it was run by LoveFilm, they just groaned and said LoveFilm was just the pits. I'm very disappointed that Tesco is allowing this appalling service to continue.
David from Hampshire on 2007-04-04 Rates them:
Dire. Used them as my first subscription to the use of online DVD rental - silly me ..... First couple of months was fine, a few scratched ones but thats life coming by post. Then Bingo - all went bad. Discs were appauling, customer Service (so called) useless and not worth the bother emailing, discs arrived at the rate of 1 unplayable out of two. So I left for ...... Lovefilm (!). Yup, was kinda silly, but I was new at this game at the time (earlyy this year - these are current comments), and I thought ok go direct to Lovefilm maybe the extra £2 will do the trick. Not a hope - exactly the same - for the simple reason Tesco only fronts the Sale - Lovefilm package and dispatch in Tesco envelopes. The whole deal stinks. Maybe one day Tesco Execs will wake up to the fact that Outsourcing admin and dispatch means Lovefilm can do what the hell they like, and Customers blame Tesco - but I am not holding my breath. Going to try MyMovieStream next, but with the cut throat price war going on, I dont hold much hope. If only someone would open a quality service - even if it was £3-4 dearer, they would clean up. I guess thats a Dream as well, since existing management team would fear for there end of year Bonus if they invested in Quality ........ [Sigh] :)

I too am in the process of awaiting a V91 form for a lost disc which was sent back through an actual post office counter. In the meantime I've received two dvds, so it's not like there is a problem with the postal service in my area. I wish I had read these sites before I had signed up and I can only hope that anyone considering signing up doesn't! I think it's fair to say that I too will be spanked for £20 for a disc I'm not responsible for, despite the fact that it says on the tesco site quote:

What happens if a disc is lost in the post?

* A disc (DVD or game) dispatched to you has not arrived.
Please allow up to 4 working days for a disc to arrive, as delays can occur due to Royal Mail. If you have not received the disc within 4 working days of dispatch, please let us know using the Report a Problem tool on your selection page. Please note that we reserve the right to suspend or cancel your membership if the postal service to your area proves consistently unreliable.

* A disc returned by you appears to be delayed or lost.
Please check the My Selection page to see if we have received the disc. We allow up to 4 working days for a disc to be returned to us, as delays can occur due to Royal Mail. If we have not received the disc within 4 working days of its return, please let us know using the Report a Problem tool on your selection page. Please note that we reserve the right to suspend or cancel your membership if the postal service from your area proves consistently unreliable.

Anyone there see it say you may be charged £20? No, it just says they remind you you may be charged if you don't cooperate. I am more than willing to cooperate. Worst still, the disc wasn't even worth £20. Whatever the turnout of my particular problem I will be cancelling my account. Avoid like the proverbial plague!

Hello all you unlucky people.
Who like me made the foolish mistake of trusting Tesco and subscribing to thier DVD rental service.
I aggree with most of the people who have said on assorted web pages "AVOID AT ALL COSTS".
I have been with them for around 3 weeks.
Over half of the DVDs supplied have been either Damaged, Cracked, Dirty, and Un-Playable.
Most of the discs looked like they have been cleaned with sandpaper.
I'm very disapointed by this so called "service".
The only advice i can offer to anyone thinking about joining is. "DON'T"
Good luck to you all.(apart from Tescos dvd rental, lovefilm, and Video Island) Who can go to hell.
This seems a fitting reward for the poor service they have given us all.
I have just closed my account, and i'm very happy i did.
I hope all reading this will also close thier accounts.
If enough of us follow suit, it might help tesco improve thier attuide and service.
I will be linking this site to as many other sites as i can.

Kevin from Stevenage on 2007-01-25 Rates them:
It seems unfortunate that the rating system doesn’t allow for minus numbers as Tesco (really Lovefilm) certainly deserve it.
They have taken a previously excellent service & turned it into the worst I have seen or heard of.
I used to get a three day turnaround (sent Monday received Wednesday) with about 50/50 1st & 2nd option titles now it is typically over a week & I haven't seen a top title since lovefilm took over, customer service is diabolical, I have had two excuses for the same complaint so they can't even agree on what lies to tell their customers, several times I have had emails claiming the title sent was in my top priority list but despite several complaints that they are not they still claim they are. The only way you will receive new releases is to only select new releases & then expect to wait eight days between discs. What they should do is change the terms from unlimited monthly rentals to one, two or three a week which to be honest they would still struggle to deliver. If I ran Tesco I would divorce Lovefilm AS SOON AS POSSIBLE and go back to the old excellent service.
Real rating, Minus 10 with a bullet. They are to DVD rental what Andy Pandy was to kick boxing.
Rachel from Northampton on 2007-01-05 Rates them:
I have used Tesco DVD for over a year and it was fine until they allowed Lovefilm to take over - now the turnaround time has increased by at least a day, they no longer email to inform what has been sent out - service has really gone downhill. Can still get priority dvds but only by keeping a list to the minimum of new releases otherwise the oldest dvd will always be posted first
Will be leaving service as soon as subscription ends but it was good before lovefilm!

Been with tesco since march great if you want old titles, with a quick turnaround. But never had a new release which is the reason i joined in the first place. They don't reply to e-mails and they don't answer the phone. I think as well if they think you've had too many discs they don't process the returns until they feel like it i've sometimes been over a week without a film.

Aviod - complete waste of money! They're now powered by love film, so leave well alone. Numerous complaints made, standard reply sent out each time. The priority system is a joke. Their customer service is awful, and although the service starts off ok, after 3 months i bet you'll only get one set of dvds each week, and hardly ever a new release! Look at the other reviews, can we all be wrong? Go with amazon.co.uk rental, more expensive fewer discs per month but you will get what you want, and they even tell you at time of selection whether or not that item is in stock or an idea of how long you will wait. For those like me, who do not have a list of anymore than 10 films tesco is useless, and afterall why should you pick films for the sheer hell of it, surely you pick only what you want to see!
chris from somerset on 2006-10-06 Rates them:
tried their two week trial period, cancelled well in time despite their website being very obscure when you try to cancel your subscription but they stiffed me for the first months rental by claiming that the dvd had not arrived on time. so i have cancelled on 1 october but paid for october but wont get any dvds! not a happy bunny and i would not recommend them. bunch of sharks.
LQQ from Bristol on 2006-08-26 Rates them:
You won't get any recent releass until they are no longer recent. They do seem to have a deliberate wait of 24 hours before they acknowledge reciept of DVDs sent back - Roayl Mail are a lot better than the DVD companies make them out to be. If they could get that sorted out I would up my rating to 6 * - I am not so concerned about the latest release bit.
It would be nice if the let you know if films were available or out.
NR from Portsmouth on 2006-07-18 Rates them:
Deliberate delaying tactics. Pretend they don't receive a returned DVD for several days so can take a week to turnaround a DVD. Not receiving any of my top choice titles either.
Marcus from Cheshire on 2006-05-09 Rates them:
It's the same old story I'm afraid. I rarely get any new releases - the priority system is a joke. I'm fed up so I will cancel my subscription (unfortunately most of the other companys are just as bad). I'm surprised Tesco are putting their name to such a crappy service.
Ben from Leeds on 2006-02-18 Rates them:
Just like to offer my thoughts on Tesco. Signed up for the trial for 2 weeks and received all the new releases. Then suddenly once the trial finished I never received another new release. So if you dont mind getting dvds that are at least 6 months old this might be for you. So I decided to cancel and sent the two dvds I had back before the payment due date. However Tesco quite sneekily sent out another dvd just before my payment date and then charged me another months rent. I have sent several emails to them complaining but they wont budge saying I have not adhered to their terms regarding sending back dvds. So I will not be using Tesco again and would so to anyone else to be very carefull.
Jon from Hull on 2006-01-25 Rates them:
They are very good at turning around DVDs but dont expect to get any new releases after the free trial. I have been waiting over a month for some new releases.
Bob from London on 2005-12-30 Rates them:
Having read the reviews on this site of Tesco's DVD rental service I thought I would add my own brief comments from my own experiences of the service. I've been using Tesco's DVD Rental for over a year now so am reasonably qualified to comment.

Initially, during the free trial, the service was excellent. Even after the free trial was over the service maintained a very high standard.

I was on the 3 DVD deal. Having a family I had a good selection of childrens DVDs along with a mix of modern day movies. Tesco's often sent at least one of the childrens DVD - which was great, but this meant we probably had a faster turn-around than most customers as we spread them out throughout the family. Despite this even if we posted three DVDs back in one day they'd be all checked in the day after and new ones shipping, arriving the very next day. So, if we sent three DVDs back on Monday we'd have three more by Wednesday to enjoy.

Unfortunately that seems so long ago now.

Tesco's have become very crafty indeed. Taking the previous example if I return three DVDs on Monday they don't get checked in until WEDNESDAY - Tesco's blame the post but I'm convinced they just "sit" on all returned DVDs for 24 hours.

In addition to this they now take an additional day to actually select any DVDs from our list.

They then take an extra day to arrive...

So, typically if I return three DVDs to them on Monday I don't receive anything until Friday of the same week - hardly a 24 hour turn-around.

As others have commented the priority system seems to have no bearing on what Tesco's send. For six months its been almost impossible to get any new titles.

What started as one of the best DVD rental services around has in the space of 12 months become the worst.

AVOID THIS ONE.
Mark from Norwich on 2005-12-19 Rates them:
Joined in March 2005 and it seemed ok with new film releases coming in the first 2 weeks (trial period).
After that service went downhill with No "top titles" being recieved for months. Some titles I've been waiting for 5 months. Totally unaccepable, gave up and rented locally.

Have complained about this a number of times and but keep getting fobbed of that their priority system doesn't mean that you will get the title. They also say that they have a limited number of each title (So does my local video shop but they don't have a problem supplying top titles!)
Tesco only seem to be able to supply crappy TV series and old movies.
Don't waste your money go elsewhere.
Tracy from London on 2005-11-24 Rates them:
Very dissapointing, I have had trials with most of these companies but chose to join tesco because it was the cheapest. But in over a month not once did i get my first first choice. It was nearly always my third choice i received. Even after a film had been released for a few weeks i still didn't get it so have given up. Also not the best website for searching / browsing titles. Pay the extra one or two pounds and chose a different service.
Roy from Hampshire on 2005-11-17 Rates them:
I have been using Tesco DVD rental for two months. Started off OK but went quickly went downhill. Never get anything that is remotely current rather they always ship something old from my lowest priority list. I am cancelling today.
Matt from London on 2005-11-02 Rates them:
Been with Tesco since July 04 - but the selection of titles that are actually delivered have been apalling over recent months.

I emailed them several times after it took 5 months to get a new releases actually delivered. They didn't seem to take my comments on board - just glossed over with a standard speal about aiming to keep their customers happy with the fairest possible system.

Well over the last 4 months my new release titles have just sat in my list and not dispatched. I thinking that if they won't move their new releases - then I'm moving to a different provider.

As a last resort I've left ONLY new releases in the list (deleting all older titles) - will see if this changes anything.

But I'm looking elsewhere already.

Started off well - quick turnaround, got the priority titles I'd chosen etc but after a few months it went down hill - started to get lower priority titles and took longer. very quick DVD turnaround in the begining, now turnaround is so slow that I'm going to cancel with them. Two complaining emails sped things up for a while, but they just slip back and are now taking in excess of FIVE DAYS to send out the next DVD, despite it being advertised as immeadiate! I can;t comment on any other supplier but Tesco is one to aviod.
Bob from South Wales on 2005-07-19 Rates them:

Started off quite poor. I couldn't get the free trial as I'd previously had the Screen Select service for a couple of months (including the free trial).

For the first two month the service was good. I was sent a lot of my top priority discs is a timely fashion.

As soon as it hit the third month the service went to sh**. 6 disks in 20 days. My turnaround was always overnight so it was the "allocation" period that was causing the problem.

I'm going back to blockbuster. I was happier then.
Jackie from Cheshire on 2005-07-05 Rates them:
Extremely disapointed with tesco,
I have cancelled my subscription. The main reason is the priority order in which the dvd's are sent out. You have 3 priority choices, and although tesco tell you ...........AND I QUOTE......
"Prioritise! - rank titles on your list so we know which are most urgent" This is the biggest load of rubbish I have ever heard. I was constanly having to remove titles from my number 1 priority list and rent them from my local hire shop. No amount of complaing helped. This was so annoying as we were paying £20.97 a month on the 5 disc deal and not seeing any new releases.
The turn around time started off great but got worse and worse. Never the 24 hours they state. Usually between 3 to 6 days.
So annoyed with tesco as they started off really good, but after that I am left felling like they were taking my money and taking the micky.
PB from Norwich on 2005-06-29 Rates them:
Stay away from Tesco rental. I cancelled my subs when the very second disk failed to turn up. One month on, it still hasn't turned up. This is the quality of their service, and when I cancelled my subs they had the cheek to warn me that I'd be fined if I didn't return all outstanding DVDs within 7 days.
They also take ages to allocate DVDs and turn them around, possibly deliberately.
Stay well away.
Stuart from Halifax on 2005-06-11 Rates them:
Initially signed up in December last year and the service was excellent; DVDs were turned around very quickly (Tesco's state they turn all DVDs around in 24 hours).

Six months on and the service has degraded badly. Popular titles are difficult to get hold of and more importantly it takes usually 3 or 4 days to send a new DVD out after the previous one has been returned.

I'm hoping this is down to the increased populatity of the service and that things will get back on track - but if it doesn't I'm going to have to try elsewhere.

It's a shame, because it really was excellent 6 months or so ago.
Mike from Neath (Wales) on 2005-06-04 Rates them:
Have been with Tesco's since February 2005. I bumped up my subscription to the 3disc level and I noticed a downturn in speed of delivery. I emailed them about it and they assured me that they do not "starve the customer" so they can limit my rentals per month.

I've only had 2 discs which were unreadable (had to be returned) since starting with them so that's pretty good going, I reckon. I find the website quite easy to use but I also do plenty of "film checking" around the net and then just type in the title on Tesco website. So far, so good.

I would genuinely pay a bit extra if they could just speed up their turnaround time as I think this could be an excellent service.

The biggest concern I have is that after reading reviews about all of the companies who do this... there's no consistency at all. It's a real shame as I'm happy paying good money for good service :-(
Jon from OXON on 2005-05-25 Rates them:
When I first signed up for Tesco DVD rental they made sure that I had every top title that was on my list, then as soon as my taster period ended it all went down hill VERY fast. I had 9 movies in my priority 1 list and a whole heap in my number 2 list and all they sent me were the DVDs in my number 3 list which really wound me up. At this stage I emailed them to tell them I was feeling frustrated. The response I got gave me the feeling that they didn't need my business so if I wasn't happy then bugger off. Lastly is the problem with delivery time. If you post a DVD back on a Thursday I often found I got nothing back until the next week. Not exactly first class? To draw to a conclusion, in my opinion Tesco DVD deals with complaints badly, has poor availability and has poor delivery times.
Cathy from West Sussex on 2005-04-15 Rates them:
Have had a subscription with Tesco since November 2004. Good value price-wise, as I watch a lot of DVDs. Turn-round has been good up to the last two weeks, when for some reason they've started to take a day and a half from receipt to sending new discs out. Quite a lot of the discs are scratched, and the prioritising discs doesn't seem to work at all. If anything is at all popular, it seems to take months to see come through - am still waiting for most of the ones I really want to see, and am only being sent the more obscure ones on my list. They really need to invest in more new stuff, in my opinion.
Debbie from Scotland on 2005-03-20 Rates them:
I joined Tescos free trial while I was already paying for DVD rentals from Blockbuster. I have now cancelled Blockbuster and stayed with Tesco. Tesco are much more reliable at sending you the titles from the top of your list. Blockbuster kept me waiting for months for certain titles, yet Tecso gave me the same titles straight away. The return envelopes are easy to use. They don't seem to be as quick at allocating a new DVD when they receive one as Blockbuster but on the whole they still provide a far better service.

Joined Tesco on the 18 of Dec, started of very good and gone down bank very fast, slow turn around of the movies and they dont seem to have any of the new movies i want, ive got 11 on the top priority and they are sending the ones from the medium priority, poor show from a big company
David Taylor from Bath on 2005-02-06 Rates them:
I switched from Screenselect October last and initially this was a good service. Since about December though my impression is that although the site is much improved and the personalised suggestions are getting much more relevant, it is not good enough to recommend any more. My main complaint is that the problem reporting page (where you notify them of non arrived disks and non arrived back disks) does not work, they take no notice of it, consequently one is left waiting for weeks with no disks. It is really hard to contact them as they have suspended their phone number (they have been claiming on the website that its "due to a recent fault with our phone exchange" which I find hardly credible) and they do not reply to emails sent to customer service. Its perfectly possible that my experiences are just bad luck but I have the impression of crisis at this company.

Be warned - these bozos are owned by screenselect!!
It seems they are buying out or "partnering" with everyone these days, and offering there poor service through other companies names.
It took them FIVE days from sign up,despite around 6 emails, to tell me I couldn't get a free trial as I'd had one from screenselect.
Promptly told them where to shove it!
Avoid like the plague.
Surprised to see tesco joining with screen select.
Sam from North Ayrshire on 2004-08-13 Rates them:
The selection of titles is quite large, but it's almost impossible to find them as the site is quite messy.

Turnaround is mixed, quite fast at times, quite slow most of the time. Most DVD's show some damage, but most of them play (although I had to copy a few on DVD-RW to be able to watch it on my stand-alone DVD player.

The price is quite low, but unfortunatly so is the quality of the discs.
alistair from devon on 2004-07-20 Rates them:
Used them since Feb 04. Been very impressed, with a fast turnaround, and quick supply of new titles. Missing disc has been resolved speedily, and only one damaged disc (still played just picture break up at one point). Replacement was sent within the week.

Only issue is don't always send in series order, and the priority setting seems to make no difference.

Also, as Tesco, you get clubcard points, and 3 discs per 4 weeks is £13.97

Overall 9.
